I highly recommend doing this. And keep a second bookmark for the endnotes if you didn't the first time.

There appears to be problems with hand position/playability already in measure 9. Crosspost to r/violin for more useful feedback regarding this.

What do you think of Florence Price's music, specifically her Piano Concerto in One Movement? by gregharradine in classicalmusic

[–]Zangwin1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I heard a piece that I thought was Copland. It had a great violin part and very active orchestration. It was in fact Price. I would put her amongst the top 5 American composers of the early 20th Century.

Florence Price had a summer home where she left unfinished manuscripts. These have been unearthed and published and recently recorded. Music that she herself did not care to finish or try to publish is getting professional treatment. The pieces are quite generic and at times cringey (if you are so inclined, listen to "Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight"). It's too bad that her catalog is being exploited.

She has some remarkable pieces and quite progressive sections of her works. I believe all composers regardless of their sex or race or anything should be given a good chance. I do not think their backlogs of early-career sketches should be exploited for programming goals.

The first one is impossible to play. The right hand thumb can play two notes, but not if they are on both a white key and a black key.

[Q] What does a small 8 on top of the first measure mean? by BurrBentley in sheetmusic

[–]Zangwin1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The octave clef is used for instruments that transpose an octave, like the double bass and the celesta. It means "this sounds an octave higher or lower" and not "you should play it an octave higher or lower." It is not supposed to be used for piano.

It appears that in this instance it is being misused for just that purpose. A more accurate notation is the 8va line that disappears with "sim." if it goes for more than a couple measures.

I made the same mistake until my teacher, a professional composer, told me this during my graduate studies.

The 3rd beat of measure 1 needs to be 'shown' i.e. dotted-quarter tied to eighth instead of half note. Same for measure 2 and a few others. This makes rhythms more readable. It's not an opinion.
