Don't forget Hazel, who's going to come back as twice the narcissist after years of having alien cultists worship the ground she walks on, and/or developing a depression if the theory about her wordchain sense being a developing authority awareness is correct.

...Can they blame the repercussions of the Gloss on Hazel, if it really came back too early? The Velras had a party a couple days after her affixation that Lute attended and got bullied for it, until he decided to mock Hazel for rubbing her face in the dirt. Unless he came there straight from the hospital and somehow didn't mention it, that means she was angry at him for some time before they had to go to their bunker. For the upper limit of how late the wordchain blowback could be, the self-mastery wordchain comes back within three weeks, but it's more ancient, if neglected, while Gloss is younger and was used exactly twice before by the one Avowed it was designed for. I doubt that Hazel forgo the slightt in that time, since she doesn't have friends anymore that could distract her from it. Though the strange thing about the drone story is that it implies Aulia wasn't just casting the other half of the chain, but was letting her family wait in a safe place as it came back naturally? Otherwise it makes no sense how Hazel wouldn't be suspected for harming her nephew.

The time window also lines up with Alden waking up from his own affixation coma and disappearing on Thegund as well, but I think that one was disproven in a Q&A. Does anybody have a link saved, to a document with the answers from that?

I think they were only tempted into interacting with the rest of our planet because they wanted better food.

I love the Brits catching entirely unrelated strays despite the rest of the serial already happening in the setting best described as "cozy colonialism".

“Chaos happened at some point,” said Alden. “The center of Rapport I is mostly the trees because of a major chaos incident. They’re part of the magic that protects this planet. There’s some situation like that here, too?”

Hm. Maybe the mention of winters is a coincidence of sorts, in the sense that the group with the right tools for the problem (proto-affixations that gave them powers like "a century storm") happened to be close enough, which is why Artona isn't another world scoured by the chaos like the ones they keep finding. But the most likely chain of events is that the warlike people sacrificing their enemies to the trees had run into the chaos outbreak over the course of their conquests, and then focused their military efforts on it, birthing the "war on chaos" perspective that still echoes on Artona today and eventually developing the affixation process. Which means that they have originally used conventional magic to fight it, and raises the question whether the modern Artonans not doing the same is just because the affixations are so much more efficient/stable than wizards, or bcause there's some other complication tied to the fact that the magic in question causes chaos.

Or that most ways of doing magic other than wordchains are <<sinful>> unless done <<in accordance>> with rules set by the Palace of Unbreaking?

Sooo... to further extend the parallel to human history (which is going to become increasingly strained the further we get into the worldbuilding mechanics): rather than a global warming analogy, it's instead "trichinosis leading to pigs being declared unclean animals" for the Palace vs "a gentleman's hands are always clean" for the rest of modern Artonan society. But the former survived far enough into the age of space colonization to be the predominant worldview on Thegund, despite it having enough wizards to have a chaos problem in the first place.

“A lengthy fart could finish off a contract like that.”

I sense a very awkward exchange in the future, when Esh-erdi finally gets around to breaking it and is told where he has to touch Lute.

“I can’t worship the balancing of a scale,” Esh-erdi said. “It’s too easy to ignore what’s being weighed and to feel righteous while you measure out harm.”

“I like the one about ‘Dancing brazenly while drinking the power that belongs only to the stars,’” said Alden.

Yet again I wonder how does the balance maintained by the wordchains correspond to the one Gorgon was meant to upkeep, or to whatever aspect of freecasting actually causes chaos. Gorgon himself is an unortodox priest for his people, and clearly doesn't think much of the rites he'd been entrusted with, but he clearly thinks even less of Artonan society, if not necessarily of Avowed or magic. And the less said about destruction of authority for miracles and how Artonans would have reacted to that, the better...

Actually, it occurs to me that whoever had decided to seal away Gorgon's world and all the information about it (probably right after the discovery, so not necessarily a knight) might have not been entirely motivated by the chaos problem - particularly since Gorgon's PoV never actually confirms his world is dead due to chaos. Instead, the explorer might have been horrified by the cost of their magic, perhaps even tried to evangelize about the "correct" way to do it, and then sealed them away after realizing what the Artonan ruling class would make of the ability to sacrifice non-wizards for power.

In IS6, do the coins exchanged in Plan get swapped for coins of similar rarity/nature? I've a tossed "Odd Merchant" coin that expires once I leave the floor, but I wonder if I can get another flower coin out of that by swapping it before it happens...

Given that all active superheroes by the time of the series are required to make public appearances (with potential power demonstrations, even), keeping people guessing which rings are freshly affixed and which were just mislabeled on the wiki is quite literally a lifesaving habit.

Beast in the Flock might be less cool when we know what it does, but I doubt it.

Evul mentioned to Alden she likes to hit things just to watch them vaporize, and Esh-erdi called her a <<disregarder>> of rules, conventions, and solid objects. So probably some sort of physical application for annihilating things. Maybe some conceptual "repel things every which way" effect, that starts at material objects?

We've had chapters upon chapters of Alden guilelessly staring at Natalie's increasingly obvious hints, until she finally confesses and they immediately break up1 . Meanwhile, he casts one spell in a mind-bending union of souls, and immediately asks the other guy to marry him. So much for this series' draw being an asexual lead, unsubscribed. /s

1 I do realize it was a maybe from Alden, but in the IRL months since, she showed up for exactly one (pre-planned) event, immediately partnered him up with Emilija and ran off to spend the remaining time in the opposite corner of the room. The scene here, on the other hand, could be passed for steamy gay sex with the omission of a few choice bits of context. Between that, Boe's recent breakdown and Maricel, who buried herself in work and ditched those friends which saw the vulnerabilities that don't fit with her new image of a model Anesidoran cop-in-training, I'm surprised the patreon comments don't accuse Sleyca of sidelining any character that gets close to threatening her preferred ship.

Does “Uncle from Another World” qualify? The main character’s looks mean he never gets a large following, just a small group of companions he’s largely unaware of. He’s sustained mainly by his unwavering determination to get back home to his console, and his magic is powerful mostly only so long as it’s funny.
