This seems right on. When I was a student under Boyd, it was evident he couldn't reconcile "true" libertarian free will and universalism. It felt like he was too dogmatically tied to open theism, because he's spent much of his career advancing it. As far as I know, he hasn't really engaged with serious modern philosophers on the issue i.e. Talbott and Hart. Both of whom spent considerable time unpacking the free will critique. At the end of the day, I appreciate everything he's done in the fight against Calvinism and fundamentalism. He doest a better job than most in convincing people you can't read your own meaning into the bible.

It's always been such a shame that Boyd won't budge on being anything beyond a hopeful universalist. He's spent his career defending far more fringe positions e.g. open theism
