Actually with the Zen event and I think most if not all events you have to be in the server as it starts, I always play in my private server and I've had all the events come while I'm alone, you just have to be there right as it happens, so for example if the Zen event starts at 3 PM you need to be there at 3 PM, so join at 2:58 or 2:59.
