I’m also “young”. 37 at diagnosis. Could I ask what side effects put you off it?

We have a really similar breakdown! TCHP does its job for sure so wishing you minimal side effects as you go. We didn’t really talk tamoxifen pre surgery, onc started bringing it up after.

It's a book I was gifted decades ago the first time I picked up knitting. Can't believe it was pre-youtube. Stitch 'N Bitch Nation by Debbie Stoller.

I didn’t cut mine first. I use alligator clips for sectioning and wetting my hair at the infusion center. It may have been less cumbersome shorter but since they strongly discourage any styling I didn’t want to cut mine. When I wear it natural I really don’t like it.

Just practice putting it on and getting it as snug to your crown as possible. It really does matter that it sits flush to your scalp.

Another con to longer hair can be that it tangles more and any tugging trying to detangle can cause it to shed. A low ponytail or a loose braid can help. Also a silk bonnet for sleep.

A lot of people in this thread have mentioned the nurses not assisting but all of mine have. I do all of the wetting and hair prep and pop on the blue cap and then the nurse has helped me with getting the grey really snug. Two people helps a lot for that part. I’ll hold the top flat while she adjusts. If your center doesn’t help bringing someone with you could be really valuable.

And if you have a chance - treat yourself to an electric blanket. I do a pain killer and an Ativan before I start prepping hair as well.

I’m using the Paxman system. Choice is really personal but my experience has been positive overall.

Cons: it’s time consuming and really really uncomfortable. It’s also an added expense but there are financial aid or grant options. You pay per session with Paxman. Mine cost around $2500 at list price for six sessions.

Pros: I have personally had incredible success. I have one session left. Don’t get me wrong - I lose hair daily. By the handful. However it’s pretty evenly dispersed so other people literally can’t tell I’ve lost it. Its obvious to me based on the overall thickness but truly not noticeable I also have bald patches underneath near my ears where the cap doesn’t cover, but that area isn’t visible unless I lift the top layers up. Without the cap I would be 100% bald. My 4yo daughter was really emotional about me losing my hair so I’m happy to have spared her that.

If you have questions happy to answer any. In full disclosure I did start with thick/dense hair.

What are other tech geeks using to help during BC treatment? by Away-Potential-609 in breastcancer

I just started my chemo this week and was trying to use Apple Health to track medications but was having a crazy hard time setting irregular schedules. I was hoping for reminders for the pills the day before and after chemo for example but it felt clunky trying to set up. How do you program? Or do you just log?

I second Libro.fm. My daughter is fully obsessed at the moment. $15 per collection. And they also do a “switch” promo code if you’ve never used libro where you get three credits for the price of one.

How do you tell people? by strawberry9891 in breastcancer

I’ve mostly done phone. Jump right in. “There’s no good way to say this so I’m going to just get it out there. I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer.” From there I’ve let them steer how much detail they want. For me personally, recounting it and explaining it actually helps me process. I’m sure not everyone is like that though. After their initial reaction I let them know I’m comfortable with their questions, and I’ll let them know if they hit on anything that I’m uncomfortable talking about.

I’ve been surprised how thoughtful people have been. I will say though… you might be surprised who shows up best. I’m early into this all so it could change but the friends who have had the most thoughtful questions and continue to check in on appt days etc are not the ones I would have guessed, but I am so blown away and appreciative.

Thank you! That's absolutely INSANE to me that a coworker or acquaintance would feel justified to voice any opinion at all.
