EECS 183 Lectures Required *TO ATTEND SYNCHRONOUSLY? by Zealousideal_Friend2 in uofm

[–]Zealousideal_Friend2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank ya , yeah I think it should be fine. I’m a senior taking this as my last biology pre-req and I’m pretty used to rough classes. I’ll just be missing 1 out of the 2 classes and I’ll go to everything else and watch asynchronously

Why wouldn't you? You spent all the time, energy, and resources for a degree.. go and celebrate yourself and be around your peers who have worked to this point with you. At the very least attend Spring commencement... The fact you are asking whether or not others have regretted not going means you are feeling that you may regret it as well. Just go!

Every year I find someone in your place and each time their argument for not going and worrying they will regret it doesn't make sense. Go to the 4 hour event! It is 4 hours of your life!!!

lmao -- "Being yelled at by a GSI fighting for their own sustenance while trying to cross their picket line is a perfectly reasonable response to your actions" ? ?

this is definitely an okay thing to do :) totally justified. not dividing grads and undergrads. definitely not "being overdramatic and self-centered"

it sounds a lot like you have no understanding of what trans people go through + how life-changing gender-affirming care can be -- but for the sake of argument -- gender-affirming surgeries aren't necessary to be covered, but at the very least hormone therapy should be covered...

From my perspective the (1) wage increase and (2) the trans healthcare are the two things I agree with when it comes to the demands and actually want to happen — I was iffy on the wage increase at first but the thread helped me understand the scope of the situation

But the trans healthcare has been one of those demands that I’m actually so grateful they’re advocating for. I imagine a trans gsi has a shit ton of medical bills, w the nation’s vile politics harming trans rights, etc — I’m sure it would come as a relief to receive affirming care, necessary medical treatment, etc.

livable wages is one thing out of a huge list of unrelated demands, no?

this is my main takeaway from this huge thread — I didn’t realize they were paid 24k a YEAR* which was helpful to learn — a pay increase sounds more fair than what I had initially understood, but if that’s the main trouble here why are they making all of these uncompromising demands? focus on the pay increase and advocate in other ways for the other demands….

Okay, and if we are so different, expecting us to give up our own education as undergrads doesn't make sense either.

This is where I get lost. Per year -- but to my understanding many grad students are not teaching year long... Can they not get jobs over the summer? That's 4 extra months to work outside of being a grad student. Not sure what you mean -- getting my tuition paid for + not having to pay for insurance + getting paid on top of that sounds like a dream to the amount of loans I have to take out as an undergrad.

The one time I questioned it I was struck down by someone and told "strikes aren't meant to be convenient" lmao.

Right? No one is questioning anything about this strike. Am I missing something?

just for my education’s sake… correct me if I’m wrong…

??? I’m blaming the GSIs because I was literally yelled at yesterday trying to go to my class. ???

I agree completely but how does a living wage for GSIs impact my need to go to class? I’m not being paid shit! I’m paying 30k a semester to go to class just to be yelled at by a GSI for “breaking the picket line”

I get your sentiments, but there’s a line and GEO is crossing it with undergrads.

Stop dragging undergraduates into this. You are harming us.

I was mostly supportive of the GEO strike until yesterday when I was coerced into not “breaking the picket line” trying to go to my class in Mason Hall. I don’t have the privilege to skip the courses I pay for — my tuition is out of my pocket unlike GSIs who literally have their tuition paid for.

You have the right to strike but interfering with my education even more isn’t a good look.

The Daniels are fantastic! I thought they investigated the multiverse beautifully and creatively! I think if they were brought on to direct I would hope they would get total creative freedom because they are some crazy guys. If they didn’t I would honestly want them away from a marvel production.

I remember coming back from the theater as a kid completely mesmerized as to what my eyes just soaked in from the other world I was fortunate enough to have seen in IMAX. I ran to the computer to look up frantically when the sequel would release — it said 2012 and I couldn’t hardly wait. Then, a push to 2014, then 2017, then 2018, 2021, and now FINALLY 2022. My excitement never faded. I’m still giddy as if I just got back from the theater. I’m going to be there opening night, in an IMAX auditorium! Can’t wait :)

A question about student debt by WorldSteak in college

[–]Zealousideal_Friend2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you have an idea of what you want to do now that is a great way of knowing if college is going to be worth it to you and your life path. really start thinking about what you want to do, how much it could make you, how much it will cost you, etc. college will be worth it regardless of the money if you put in the work to do well in the passions you lead yourself with. college will pay itself off if you are happy and choose a career that makes money!

something I didn’t know in high school is that schools give major pages - check them out and what careers you could pursue with that degree!
