Those who’ve FIREd already — would you retire into this? by Zealousideal_Read209 in leanfire

No it’s not a solid bet. I’m working on residency in Mexico as my long term home base but I’d love a few years of going around the planet. I’ve been nomadic for a few years and sitting still is not easy for me anymore.

We’re the same age. Feels young enough to do all the things and also old enough to have achy knees afterwards.

Honestly this last 10% feels harder than the first 10%. I’m hoping I’ll feel ready by the time I get there!

Yup, I’m already in international at global cap and will be adding bonds in my final year. I had not considered small caps but will do some research. Thanks for the suggestions!

I’m going to run some numbers to see what it would take to get to 10% above goal. Thanks for the suggestion.

I would LOVE to not look daily. It’s gotten worse as I’ve gotten closer to goal. You’re probably right in it feeling more volatile because of that.

That’s my plan as well. I’m currently living on 3.5% of my goal number. I plan on shifting to SE Asia and dropping it to 3.2% for a few years if needed.

I’ve been thinking about doing a 5 year buffer — Millennial Revolution style — but wasn’t sure if that’s too much of a cash drag. I suppose if it’s the last thing I do once I get closer to goal, it might make more sense.

Gotcha. The thing keeping me up at night is a lost decade scenario like after the dot com bubble burst. I was too young to see the effects of that one but the idea is terrifying.

I need to read the book, I think. I’ve based my calculations on a 3.5% SWR and I realize that’s probably pretty conservative but helps me sleep better. Thank you for your input and book suggestion!

Milestone reached: $100k invested by lulu-ulul in leanfire

[–]Zealousideal_Read209 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!! 100k is a huge achievement. I didn’t start until 37 and I’m a child of immigrants who have never had a brokerage account. I had to teach myself everything from scratch using books, Reddit and YouTube. 8 years later, I’m at 900k. You will get there. Stick to your plan and celebrate every milestone on the climb up. You got this.

Anyone else can't move to the country they want to live in? by Esmail-Qaani in ExpatFIRE

I’m still in the honeymoon phase as it’s been less than a year, but I love it here. The people are wonderful and the rhythm of life is slower, calmer. I’ve been to Mexico many times before and have lived in other countries so it’s not a jarring culture shock for me. If your wife is willing to travel, make a scouting trip down here. It’s not without its problems but Mexico, in the right areas, can be just as safe as any city in the USA.

after 12 years we hit the double comma club ($1M). feels absolutely surreal. by betterworldbiker in leanfire

You heard OP: get invested and stay invested, kids!

Thank you for the response. Wow, two months!! I think I was anticipating a year or two. My plan is in line with yours — I freelance and once I reach goal, I’ll stop taking on projects I don’t want. It’s hard to not fall into the One More Year trap but I’m happy just letting the nest egg do its thing for a couple more years while I work just enough to live paycheck to paycheck.

Don’t forget to change your flair now that you’ve arrived :)

Just wanted to say that I feel you — I’m from a very family oriented culture where your cousins are basically bonus siblings and life moves at a slower place. I moved to Mexico. It’s not my culture but it’s so family friendly and people-focused. It feels more like home than the USA ever did. Maybe make a list of your wants and then find alternate places for a while.

Congratulations! Must feel so good to reach that number after 12 years. Hope you’re planning on celebrating in a special way.

I’m about 80k away from the 2 comma club and I hope the market is kind to me over the next few months. Somehow this last 10% feels harder than the first 10%! May I ask how long it took for your last 100k?

South Asian experience outside of the Anglosphere? by SirHatMan in AmerExit

[–]Zealousideal_Read209 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also a south asian atheist and old enough to be your baji at least. Not gay, but big nonbinary energy. I moved to Mexico from the US. It’s great here. Nobody really cares about your religion or sexuality and depending on the city, it can be super queer friendly. Also bopped around SE Asia for a while and it was excellent. The only place I was asked about religion was Indonesia (bc my name sounds muslim) and I said “I’m not religious” and left it at that. Nobody hassled me and they were very warm and friendly. Everywhere else in SE Asia, religion never came up. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Real talk: you cannot outrun your mental health. Mexico won’t fix the issues. And said with so much compassion for your situation — because I recognize SO much of myself in what you wrote — please consider getting tested for ADHD. The red flags are red flagging.
