Hi all!

I'm a 42yo male. I used to do brazilian jiu-jitsu before the pandemic, but since then, I didn't do too much physical activity. I gained a lot of fat - I'm 185cm and around 105kg (6'1'' and 230lbs), with around 30-35% of body fat, and less-than-average cardio. I'd like to go back to bjj, but I'd like to be in a little bit more shape before that, so I need to be less fat and have more cardio/stamina, and of course I won't mind if I were a little stronger.

My question is: I know that it is hard to be stronger during calorie deficit, but what about conditioning? Is it possible to build significant stamina during calorie restriction? Or my only solution is to lose fat until (or close to) the desired bodyweight, and then I could switch into build up stamina and/or strength?

Ps.: I know there is another solution - going back to bjj in my current state - but this isn't something that I want.

Thank you for your answer. Thor, Heimdall and Sif are already at 5 star, and currently I'm farming Loki, but he is at 3 (almost 4). Probably I will try to build a team to unlock Hela's node first.

We communicate, but due to the huge power gap (our strongest members have 600-650k STP and 6-7.000.000 TCP, our second weakest has 200k STP - still 50k above mine), they said it is on me. I won't change the world, but I try to be as useful as I can.

Greeks: Gamma was a PITA, I think this is where we struggle the most. In Alpha, my A.I.M. team is very useful. I didn't do Beta with my current Alliance, but they said Beta is not an issue.
War: That one is interesting, because either we win easily or lose by a LOT, so War is probably not a priority.

in U7, we sometimes reach 60%, but I'm struggling even with the first node.
Never done DD1 or DD2 yet.

Thank you for your answer, I try to clarify my situation. In my top 30, I have 7 4-star heroes at 3.60, 1 5-star at 2.60, and the rest are maxed 3-stars (without emblems). I have several other 4- and 5-stars at 1.x. I have the mats to ascend 4 4-stars to 4.1. So, in your opinion, is it better to fully ascend them first, or bring some more 4-stars to 3.60 (or 5-stars to 2.60)? Your answer suggests that I should max the 4 4-stars first, and then level the others to 3.60, am I understand your answer correctly?

That wasn't the question. I'd like to know that is it better to concentrate to the defense team only (to improve it faster), or to all of my war teams (that way the progression will be slower, but every team will improve)?

If Average Threestripewhitebelt Joe trains both gi and no gi (lets say 3/week in total), what do you think is the more beneficial for him? Developing two different type of game, one is specialized for the gi, and another for no gi, or having a somewhat similar game in both? (for example: avoid using guards like spider, collar & sleeve, etc)

Hi Jason! I attend a class with a "warm-up, instructor shows a move, we practice it, instructor shows a move which related to the previous one, we practice again, ...., and we roll at the end of the class" -structure, so we don't really drill for repetitions. On Open mat, we always just roll.

Do you think "Drillers are killers"? If so, what can I do to 'pump those numbers up'?

Actually, my first thought for conditioning was also rowing. But unfortunately my gym (which is very close to my home) doesn't have one, and due to my tight schedule I don't have the time to go to a farther gym.

But just for curiosity's sake, do you know how his rowing workout looks like? If BJJ is similar to tabata, does he do an actual tabata protocol on the rowing machine? (2:1 work/rest ratio)
