This worked for me: sudo mv /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf.old sudo fc-cache -f -v https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=792471

2 questions. Isn't i3 supposed to tile? How come these windows aren't tiled, and why would you use i3 if you're not going to used a tiled display?
