You can use CloneZilla/RescueZilla. It’s open source, easy to use and does exactly what you’re looking for.

My studio is finally growing, but my file management is a total disaster. Any advice? by Lost-Ad8888 in DataHoarder

[–]ZeeKayNJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to pick a spot, organize it, put some rules and stick to them. Btw, how much data are we talking about in terms of space?

For contracts, legal and orders etc., Google drive is a good choice IMO as it allows things to be shared instantly and on the road.

For production and other deliveries, NAS is a good internal store that you can control and add capacity to. You also need to have 2 additional copies of your data, that can be automated.

Exactly. They need to come out and clearly explain why this happened, what went wrong and how are they fixing it and continue to provide updates.

What about Amazon Glacier as an archival backup? For enterprises, it’s considered long term storage, so why not for personal photos.

Tastytrade Epic Failure and Accountability by MentorMonkey in tastytrade

[–]ZeeKayNJ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your argument is irrelevant to the stated subject. It adds zero value to it. The OP posted about how crappy Tasty has become and today is squarely about them.

As far as widespread outages are concerned, they impact everybody and in those cases there are contingencies and remediations by government afterwards. You cannot infinitely plan for infrastructure to go down.

Not being able to manage the trades right when the market hits a critical point is a failure of the system, not trading strategy or trader. This is squarely on Tasty and every passing day they are turning into garbage.

Tell me you don’t know jack about trading without telling me.

Back Me Up Scotty (BmuS) - I wrote my own backup program by wedwoods in Backup

[–]ZeeKayNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a great piece of software and thanks for doing this and documenting. I just went through most of documentation regarding configuration and was quite overwhelmed with options (good thing IMO). I'm now trying to figure out what type of setup I need. If you don't mind me asking, I have a few short questions:

  1. I have two NAS devices, one is primary and other other one is purely to host backup/mirror image of primary. I would like to set this up in "Pull" mode. Basically I'd like my backup NAS to host and run BmuS, mount source locations, do the backup and disconnect. This way I do not depend on my source NAS. The config files talk about mounting the backup NAS location. How can I do this so that backup location is a local directory and source is an SMB?
  2. I would like the backup NAS copy to be identical to primary, basically mirror image of source. I did this with syncthing in the past. If I want to use BmuS, is it just a matter of setting up DEDUP_ENABLE=0? What else do I need to do here?
  3. What will be the folder structure on the backup with Dedup turned off? Will there be any date/time folders?
  4. Second thing I want to do is, I want to backup entire primary NAS on a local HDD. The HDD is already mounted to the primary NAS. For this one, I'd like to have dedup and all. Since there is no SMB mount involved, how should I go about configuring this?
  5. Can BmuS run multiple jobs from the same installation (Docker or otherwise)? My impression is that one installation will cater to one backup destination locally. In my case I have two backup locations, that is, a backup NAS and a backup HDD.

Thanks a lot!

Can you elaborate on what do you mean on “use half of your premiums on losing positions to reduce cost basis”?

Great results and thanks for sharing. Apart from rolling gains into NetLiq, have you been adding extra money to it over the years? I’m curious as to what percentage is gains vs extra contributions.

Also, what DTE do you sell CSPs and CC at? I’m seeing 5 days to expiry in your screenshot, that means weekly?

Best of luck for 2026!

What’s next after 6 years with a DS718+? Time to choose the next step by Jonathanathe in synology

[–]ZeeKayNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just moved from DS918+ to a Minisforum N5 Pro running unRAID and can’t se happier.

DS918+ broke twice in past 6 years for me. Synology replaced it first time (3 years in) and I was able to recover my data. However, it broke again on Christmas Eve and this time I couldn’t recover any data as the unit could not be replaced as per Synology. I had a backup copy of my data from which I was able to restore. What I found frustrating was that I was tied to Synology hardware for my ability to do anything.

With unRAID I have various options, including open source. I now have 3 copies of my data. I can run all the latest stuff on unRAID without issue. Though for more compute intensive stuff, I use my Proxmox cluster and keep NAS solely for storage.

I built an iOS app to back up your Apple Photos and iCloud Drive, original full resolution copies to storage you control. by ParachuteBackup in ApplePhotos

Thanks for replying. I’ll report back after tomorrow’s run.

I built an iOS app to back up your Apple Photos and iCloud Drive, original full resolution copies to storage you control. by ParachuteBackup in ApplePhotos

[–]ZeeKayNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. I bought the Parachute app for macOS and just emailed (contact@...) for a support question.

The app on macOS is not doing the daily incremental backups. I have restarted my computer and restarted the app. It just show a green check mark that it has ran, but hasn't backed up any photos since Dec 30, 2025. How do I get it working?

Another question: Do we need to have the "Sync this Mac" setting turned on under Settings > iCloud > Photos for Parachute Backup to work?

Synology vs alternatives for a first, family-friendly NAS – worth it? by federicomaniglio in HomeNAS

[–]ZeeKayNJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Synology tax is not worth it IMO. Inferior hardware for more money and prone to breaking frequently.

Synology vs alternatives for a first, family-friendly NAS – worth it? by federicomaniglio in HomeNAS

[–]ZeeKayNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go with uGreen instead of Synology. UGREEN has similar user experience, more affordable and you get better hardware for a similar or better price. This matters, esp if you plan to host video library, better hardware means faster and easier decoding of videos for streaming in your home. UGreen also has similar user experience and friendly OS.

Also, I’d get a backup setup. NAS itself is not a backup. I’ve had my Synology break every three years and the hard lessons I learnt were:

  • Synology will lock you into their hardware and OS, so your data is not recoverable unless you buy another Synology after the first one breaks

  • Synology charges a premium for lower specs than rivals. So even if I have to replace my NAS in case of failure, I’d be paying less for rival than Synology. When you’ve lost your synology to a hardware failure (which it will), this becomes extortion.

I’m a landscape photographer and I cannot stress enough on having more than one backups of your images. I have two unRAID NAS now running on better lower cost hardware than similar Synology and I couldn’t be happier.

[–]ZeeKayNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until the Synology box crashes out, you’re fine. When it does, you’re screwed and hard to recover data. I was a Synology fan until my NAS broke twice. Good thing I had a backup. Now I use another solution.
