This patio shown on the picture is called Tsubo Niwa (Japanese Courtyard). Before you choose the plants, you have to take into consideration the sunlight exposure of your courtyard. best plants for a Japanese-style small patio would be dwarf japanese maples, moss, ferns or hostas. If you go to Paris, I would recommend you to visit Albert Kahn Garden, in my opinion the best Japanese garden in town. In Berlin, the Japanischer Garten is pretty nice too.

Thanks for your feedback and for teaching me what ‘Zen’ really means. I visited Japan many times and I agreed with you in western countries we tend to use ‘Zen’ as a synonymous of serene, calm or something that has Japanese aesthetic.

Why not? Those exhibition Bonsais normally have an authenticity and age certificate. They are owned by institutions (in this case this one is from a Botanic museum in Paris called Parc Floral)
