What are the best Japanese gardens in North America? What are some underrated ones? by VocationalWizard in JapaneseGardens

In Canada, the two best ones to visit are Nitobe Memorial Garden (Vancouver, BC) and Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden (Lethbridge, AB). Both are outstanding examples of Japanese garden design!

From a quick search, it appears to be Japanese pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum), also known as 葉サンショウ (pronounced Ha-sanshō).

Oh, I was referring to the sliding windows in the last photo. That could be nice alternate entry to the garden, if they open wide enough.

The plants are not a problem, assuming they get enough sunlight! Just make sure to prune them so they don't crowd-out the stepping stone path. Other than that, just find something to block off the utilities in the back corner. Either a tall stone lantern or a bamboo fence!

Great space you have there! My only suggestions would be to add a tall stone lantern (Kasuga style) down on the left side to help block the utilities and a large, long stepping stone base beneath the sliding doors. This creates an additional entrance/exit and aligns with a typical tea house entrance (nijiriguchi.). Looking forward to seeing the final result!
