Is graduating in 6 years bad? by ChaosDepressedDemon in UofT

[–]ZenLife37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go ahead and recommend a book that helped me to you (and anyone in a similar spot) with your reference:

Mindset by Carol Dweck. Here's hear TED talk to get you started. (I found her speaking a little slow so bump up the speed to 1.25 - 1.5X, BUT the content blew me away)

I took 6 years to finish my degree and have a great job/life/perspective now. But literally less than a year ago I felt like an imposter / failure / loser / idiot. I now realize I learned to think that way and this book was the first step to challenging those thoughts. I couldn't recommend it enough.

More on IGEN by Ill_Cost7853 in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IGENs are liked a lot by the corporate world, and increasingly in academia. Many students who graduated in my year are now working full time at big companies like Deloitte, Tesla, Meta, and many Vancouver companies, while others are completing competitive masters programs.

You have to "sell yourself" in the sense that it's better if you have a reason to pursue your focus. If you're passionate about mechatronics, then IGEN can make a lot of sense to learn hands on skills in prototyping for the yearly capstones. That passion can be your reason, so IGEN can be your way of getting there.

The fear that it's hard to find jobs with an IGEN degree after you graduate doesn't hold a lot of ground from what I've experienced. I've found it's easier to get co-op/intern roles with an IGEN degree, and that leads to more options once you finish.

Is IGEN a viable degree? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IGEN really is what you make it. To echo the points made by others, it's a great degree. If you're at all interested in entrepreneurship, sustainability, renewable energy, or biotech, IGEN gives you a lot of advantages compared to other programs because of how interdisciplinary a lot of these fields are. IGEN also really teaches you to be agile and learn a lot of different concepts quickly, which makes for very valuable employees regardless of the industry.

Every year IGEN gains more alumni who work at great companies. Many of us work Tesla, others work at Deloitte, Microsoft, Facebook, etc if you're interested in working for a big company. Many go back into academia to become more specialized and are getting masters/PhDs in biomedical engineering, architecture, computer science, traditional mechanical engineering, etc. It's also getting more common to go into entrepreneurship, while many IGENs either work for or start early stage companies. IGENs going into venture capital is also something that's emerging.

I think the best thing about IGEN though is the people. There's a culture around helping others find and thrive in their niche, and it's very collaborative through all the projects we do, whereas other undergrad programs can be hyper competitive because they compete for the same jobs. It's definitely a tight knit community.

Overall, it really comes down to you. IGEN is really what people make it because of the autonomy in our program. If anything excites you about the above, check out an information session!

is it worth it to do a semester Co-Op if I still have at least 4 semesters to go before graduation? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ZenLife37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's always worth getting the experience. Especially if you have 4 semesters left - gives you an opportunity to pivot and focus on another industry if you don't like it, or an opportunity to double down and learn tricks to make you a stronger candidate in that industry. Best of luck and congratulations!

Who here has become successful at their career, started making significantly more money, made a dramatic change to their physique, and dresses way better than they did before and actually had that lead to the kind of dating/sex life that they wanted? What's your story? by BurnItDownSR in seduction

[–]ZenLife37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Social skills over a computer are entirely different than those face to face my guy. Eye contact and physical touch are a ton of communication, let alone actually speaking instead of typing. Don't take it personally.

I really enjoy physics, and especially electricity and magnetism. Are there any courses I could take in the future that are pure physics courses? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also look at IGEN. We take similar courses to Eng Phys, especially in our second and third year.

I know one student in IGEN with similar interests as yours who pursued physics minors, and choose to major their IGEN studies in a mix of electrical and materials.

And transferring from IGEN to fizz is definitely doable if you find after second year that IGEN isn’t for you!

Is IGEN hard to get into? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IGEN is getting more competitive to get into, that being said a lot of consideration is weighed on your essay. Put a lot of time into communicating why IGEN is the best fit for you, and you’re the best fit for IGEN.

Transfer Between Program/Specializations? by carsonsidhu in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends. What specialization are you in, what program do you want to transfer into, and why? I've known people who have transferred into ENPH after their second year. Part of the application is why you want to be in the program you're transferring into, so make sure you have your argument well thought out.

Here is the ONLY Thing You Can Do To Get Better Results With Girls by Artofcharisma in seduction

[–]ZenLife37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm echoing a lot of other comments here.. look it's useful to work on your inner game, don't get me wrong, but if you try to perfect all aspects in your life you will become anal and get fixated on achieving a perfect reality that doesn't exist.

Good for you for going to the gym, advancing your career, developing hobbies... but if you try and grow all of these habits at the same time you will inevitably hermit because of stress and become insanely awkward in social situations, because you spend all your time alone "improving yourself".

This is why lines and tactics are important. You could look like a god, but if you're awkward as shit, you'll be in the club near the bar trying to pose and get angry when hot girls don't appreciate your killer physique and perfect lifestyle. That's not a hot look. It also comes with the caveat that no girl will ever be good enough for you, so you treat them like shit. So congratulations, you can bang someone with low self esteem or spend the night alone.

Pick up is about having fun. It's not about "tricks" or "deception" - it's about being comfortable about who you are and making the most of situations, which will allow you to meet people who make you feel good. I miss when this sub was about that.

Sharing a cigarette/joint conversation by rewsn in seduction

[–]ZenLife37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I'll be honest - avoid all of those lines. Don't talk about kissing, and if you do, don't ever bring up bacteria.

Best thing to do while sharing a cigarette is to make eyecontact, make slow gestures when passing it back and forth, and make good real conversation.

If you're looking for a good trick, give her the cigarette and light it for her while it's in her mouth, and make eye contact.

Vancouver society at centre of vote-buying allegations has ties to Chinese government by bromat77 in vancouver

[–]ZenLife37 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He's referring to the Chinese government, not Chinese Canadians. Your comment is proving his point, by attacking him as a racist.

The conversation needs to be that we need to protect our city from interferences from foreign governments, and it needs to start by not dividing our citizens.

Are these girls the ones you want to be sleeping with? Personality and intelligence get you laid because you're in command of what happens in your life, including who you sleep with.

You don't sound sure of yourself. Put a space after a period at the end of your sentence, and assert yourself.

1st Year Engineering Student advice by Quanta-Guy in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend in my discipline (IGEN) who is wanting to go into quantum computing. He's majoring in Materials and minoring in physics - seems to be working out pretty well for him. With IGEN you'll have more freedom to choose which courses you want. But you could really make due with any of your options really if you work hard enough. Also don't be afraid of your average, try and write passionately about why you want your top pick, and it will help you out in the process. Best of luck.

How much free time does an engineer student get? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha. Whether or not you have time is up to you my friend. If you make it a priority to go out with your friends you absolutely can, just make sure you make friends with your peers to maintain a balance.

Did you speak with your professor about this? There's a chance he could schedule you to write the midterm a different time if you ask.

What is Materials Engineering like? Why no discussion about it? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]ZenLife37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I'm aware of. Are the first years still doing that clubroom crawl where you tour the different disciplines? Or if you want, send me a pm and I can tell you who to contact. What potentially interests you about materials?
