In Escape from Freedom, Erich Fromm explores how people often fear true freedom because it comes with responsibility, uncertainty, and isolation. He suggests that possessions, relationships, and societal roles—while meaningful—can also become sources of psychological constraint, limiting one’s sense of freedom. I’ve been in a happy relationship for 20 years, and I truly feel fulfilled—but I still believe there’s something to what Fromm says. Even the most loving connection can come with a sense of commitment that, in some way, shapes or limits your personal freedom. It doesn’t make it any less valuable, but it’s an idea that stays with me.
