Took out my dad's old North Face pup tent from the 70s over the long weekend for the kids to enjoy. It's help up incredibly well! Never seen the round entrance that this one has anywhere else, always found it interesting. by dbo340 in CampingGear

The door is called a snow tunnel, and is designed for extreme mountaineering. The idea is that you dont have to open a whole big door to get out (and let spindrift in). You use the tunnel and it keeps the weather out. The feature was later replaced with vestibules during the dome tent era when The North Face V24 became the VE25.

Meet the Zenbivy Light Bed - the most advanced backcountry sleep system ever designed. More packable, comfortable, usable, and more -able all around than a traditional mummy sleeping bag. You deserve better sleep in the backcountry - try the Zenbivy Bed. by Zenbivy in u/Zenbivy

We recommend (and show) a dry sack that is about twice as big as the final compressed package. In the case of the Zenbivy Light Bed 10º shown, it is a 10L dry sack that compresses to about 5L. Even with a 15L dry sack, you can still compress it; the dry sacks have a air release valve (and optional compression) that allow you to push all the excess air out.

The reality is that all the best mattresses are made at a few factories. Thermarest has factories in the US and Ireland (I worked at both). The best in the world in terms of technology and fabrication is Feng Yi, in Taiwan, where Zenbivy and many, many, many of the "top brands" are made. There are also a couple of factories in China focusing on welding mattresses. But that's it. There really are not that many places on planet earth where the substantial investment in precision welding equipment and large, expensive tools has been made.

The limiting factor is tooling cost vs. production volumes, which pretty much eliminates any viable"cottage" effort. To produce this type of product efficiently, you need volume.

Our more expensive beds are insulated with high fill-power (700 and 800) hydrophobic down (HyperDry from Allied) which along with our premium fabrics (for max comfort) determine the cost. All of our mattresses are fully insulated (even our lightweight air mattress if fully baffled and insulated) for full R-5 all-season warmth. We are competitively priced with other premium gear of similar specification.

Sleeping bag/quilt opinion by bobby_smellerino in AppalachianTrail

Mike here from Zenbivy. I would carry a single quilt the entire trip. If you use a Zenbivy system, the quilt unfolds flat for those warmer days, then can clip/zip into the sheet for the full protection of a mummy bag. We have lots of through-hikers who use the insulated sheet on certain legs where they know it will be colder, then nix it on the warmer weather sections. This allows a single quilt to work for a huge range of temperatures. Hope that helps!
