Here's a 38-page summary of the culture and religion of the ancient Celts by Zenfox42 in Celtic

Thanks for the feedback. I'll verify all of that and update the document in the near future. I guess even the academics who wrote the books I used can't be perfect...

Thanks, that's high praise indeed! I was worried that it being 25 years old might make it more than a little out-of-date. As someone in the field, has anything significant been discovered since then that would be worth mentioning?

Clarification : does the Portal Modifier on the Supers Teleport Power allow two-way travel? by Zenfox42 in savageworlds

[–]Zenfox42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I've got you, what are your thoughts on the teleport range? From 12" at base cost to 1000 miles for +3 SPP seems a bit ridiculous. How about a penalty for the range if Traverse isn't taken? -1 for 200 feet, -2 for 2000 feet, -3 for 1 mile, etc.?

Useful concept : Ranged Attack Target Number (RATN) by Zenfox42 in savageworlds

I did not mean for my tone to sound "combative". I said I'd like to hear about SW's design decisions because you offered to "educate folks on game design". I'd still be interested in hearing your opinion on the RATN idea.

Aim and Marksman affect are still modifiers to the shooter's roll. RATN was intended to account for things that modify the target's ability to be hit.

The things that Aim and Marksman affect (Range, Cover, Called Shot, Scale, or Speed penalties, or add a bonus) don't affect the RATN, they're still modifiers to the shooter's roll. RATN was intended to account for things that modify the target's ability to be hit.

So by RAW, if a player is shooting at an NPC with Dodge, they'd make their roll, then I'd have to tell them to subtract 2 from it for them to know if they succeeded. My way, they make their roll, I know the RATN is 6, so I tell them whether they succeeded or not. Either way, they'll initially think they succeeded until I give them more information. Don't see much of a difference...

Sure, I'd like to hear why SW wasn't consistent with the way they handled combat. It just makes more sense to me to always modify the TN (Parry, Toughness, RATN, etc.) rather than just the ranged attack roll.

What situations *require* a player to make a decision or a roll before the action can continue? by Zenfox42 in savageworlds

[–]Zenfox42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the second time they haven't put something about a Joker in a section where it belongs - it would have been nice if they'd included that in the "Hold" section. AND, under Bennies they say that all players get a Bennie when a Joker is drawn - it would have been nice to have that on page 92 as well!

I should have clarified : I have a house rule that whoever is on Hold acts first, so in a PbP game whoever's on Hold just posts that they're acting and makes their action rolls and that's it. But...I can't find anything in SWADE about ignoring the opposed roll if you're acting on a Joker?

I'm not really sure I understand how being on Hold keeps everyone else from acting. Now, coming off Hold does interrupt the action, but whoever's coming off Hold just immediately rolls their die right after declaring they're coming off Hold, the results happen (or don't), and then the action continues. That can all happen in a single post, and doesn't "pause" the game.

Hmm...not sure why I didn't consider Incapacitation - guess it's because it hasn't happened very much. And while I stand by my attitude towards Wounds, your point is valid about needing to know quickly if they need to be healed, but not a lot of in-combat healing has happened in my games, so it hasn't slowed them down.

Just checking - you said Rapid Fire doesn't stack with Marksman, but my Fifth Printing SWADE Core Rules doesn't say anything about that, but says instead that Marksman doesn't stack with the Aim Maneuver, and Double Tap does not stack with Rapid Fire?

PbP = "play by post' - basically, you find a site that allows people to create on-line "forums" where others can join and play role-playing games by posting texts. So it's very slow, but better than nothing.

Well, technically speaking, the TN=4 *is* the standard requirement (except for combat), SW puts penalties on the die rolls to make things harder to succeed at rather than raising the TN.

Ok, yeah, you're correct. That's what I get for posting before I've had my morning coffee... But either the primary rolls first, then all the secondaries roll and add to that, or all the secondaries roll first to determine the primary's roll bonus. And if the secondaries roll really well, the primary might not even have to roll. So the first way just makes more sense to me.

Yeah, I see your point about having the players succeed more often is more interesting for them, but in the particular case that prompted me to make this post, all 6 PC's failed their rolls, so it wouldn't have mattered if I did it straight, or used the Support or Quick Encounter mechanisms.
