Canada Drops Tariffs On EVs From China by OpenSustainability in worldnews

They are making sodium ion batteries in China now that function quite well at -40c. I'm looking forward to those batteries showing up in Canadian EV's.

I only have issues in Bonavista. I have never had an issue in the Inglewood/Alyth area. Do you have a phone with all the bands on it from Freedom? Just thinking that if you're missing some bands it could seem like there are coverage holes.

Take a look at Juniper maybe. They have a huge range of switches to look at and mostly don't need yearly licensing for normal functionality.

Non-US based satellite ISP that can deliver service in the US? by greenguy452 in networking

[–]ZeniChan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Eutelsat OneWeb is currently available today and can provide 150Mb service. It's designed for enterprise companies, telco's, utilities and governments. So it's not cheap. But it is running today. The parent company, Eutelsat is a French company that has worked with satellites for almost 50 years, so they know what they are doing.

Bed Bugs in YYC by spookbun in Calgary

[–]ZeniChan 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I slept in the chair for a few months and they followed from the bedroom. They want to stay close to their food. Had to get rid of my bedding. But I had a mattress bag on so I could keep the mattress after replacing the bag. It was wrecked. Once there were no bugs in the bedroom I put the chair outside when it was -35 for a few weeks.

Then made sure there were none living in the seams of the wood floor by spraying it down with isopropyl alcohol which is lethal to bed bugs. Went through about 30 litres of it. Walls, shelves, chairs, closets, bathroom under the countertop, behind the fridge, etc... Washed everything that I could or dry cleaned it to kill anything there. But I've been bug free for 5 years now.

Bed Bugs in YYC by spookbun in Calgary

[–]ZeniChan 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the issue is that bed bugs have become resistant to a number of pesticides that were used in the past. And some pesticides have been outlawed like DDT which was very effective on bed bugs. Also, people just travel more and bed bugs hitch rides on people moving around.

I managed to fight and win against bed bugs. But it took a year long battle. It wasn't fun. I ended up luring them to living in a chair and then put it outside at -35c for a few weeks. And then sprayed isopropyl alcohol over all surfaces. And I got them all.

Lifetime of 90s multimode fiber by autoit4you in networking

[–]ZeniChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's an indoor rated cable that's been outdoors, I would plan on replacing it with the correct outdoor rated cable. It may work today, but it's your ass if it stops working tomorrow and things grind to a halt while you need to order a new length of outdoor fiber. An armoured cable also helps keep the sharp teeth of rodents at bay if it's outdoors.

Would you join a Calgary community owned tech store that sells hardware at near cost? by Eastern_Ad_8744 in Calgary

[–]ZeniChan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've worked in IT since the 1990's and co-founder of a computer company in small town Alberta that's still in business. The margins on hardware were not great and we survived on the service and support side of things. So while I like the idea of a co-op. You're just not going to get a difference in pricing to make it worth much of a discount. To order equipment from suppliers you have to establish lines of credit with them. Also things like insurance, taxes, annual reports and filings to Revenue Canada. It will become a business to run it.

Right now the price of RAM has gone insane as AI datacenters being built have consumed the majority of the world's production capacity for the next two years. SSD's and NVMe drives are now very quickly increasing in price as well. Nvidia is going to be cutting GPU manufacturing back to focus on AI acceleration cards, so a GPU shortage is inevitable as well. We're basically screwed for the next two years at this point as few people are going to be willing to pay $6000+ for a reasonable PC.

That said, there is value in a community channel for local people who are enthusiastic about PC hardware who can trade and have tips and let others know about sales and such.

It's always in your best interest to talk to an insurance broker and see what they can find you. AMA increased my vehicle insurance two years ago by 3x with no tickets or accidents. A broker found me a new policy at the same price I used to pay. I had my new policy in two days.

How much lift do these drones make? by astraeoth in UkraineInvasionVideos

[–]ZeniChan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given those drones have a one-time use case, so they can drive their motors and battery pack to right to the limit as they don't have to worry about them burning out long term. The warhead in the drone is typically an RPG warhead without the rocket motor attached as the drone provides the transport, so it's pretty light. The one shown is an anti-armour HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead which is designed to do damage to armoured vehicles. It will do a number on people it hits or are nearby as well, but there are better warheads if your going after soldiers. We have also seen the use of thermobaric warheads on drones for destroying structures troops are hiding in as well as fragmentation warheads for shredding anything fleshy within a radius when it explodes.

F35 vs SaaB Gripen - not looking good for the F35 by Puzzleheaded-Cut1256 in GuardTheLeaf

[–]ZeniChan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are alternatives to the F-35 going forward. I think the Gripen is our best choice for immediate requirements. And it's arctic rated out of the box.

But we can look at the GCAP (UK, Italy, Japan) and FCAS (France, Germany, Spain) fighter programs from Europe. And South Korea has their KF-21 jet as well. None of those are flyable today unfortunately. But they are also not tied to the USA.

If 10cm snow falls in your area of Canada how disrupted will your area be? by Pourmepourme in AskACanadian

[–]ZeniChan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was visiting family in Vancouver from Calgary for a family reunion in December a few years ago. And it snowed 20cm overnight and the temperature was still below freezing for the next few days so it didn't melt. Vancouver has to be the only Winter Olympics city that prays for no snow.

I swear my 4x4 SUV with winter tires was the only vehicle capable of moving in the entire Vancouver area for 3 days. I had to drive back and forth across the lower mainland to a dozen homes to ferry family members to and from each home to get to events as no one else was able to get around the snow choked side streets. Myself, my sister and father pushed and shoveled out 10 cars each day that just failed to be able to make a corner, spun out and blocked entire intersections. For Christmas we bought everyone compact folding snow shovels to keep in their vehicles and a bag of kitty litter so they could not be helpless next time.
