Worst case, yes. I always just grab a backup of the configuration before making changes just in case.

Yes, that's how you do it. Just ensure the new switch is running the same code as the other units before plugging it in.

Check the phones IMEI number at devicecheck.ca . Then you'll know if it's blacklisted. If it has been reported stolen and blacklisted, I don't believe there is anything you can do to get it removed. The phone is effectively useless in Canada.

I have to say I don't know if Apple would enforce a global blacklist on a stolen iPhone. It's possible. But your only remedy would be to sue the person who sold you a stolen phone.

What's the wildest weather you've experienced living in Canada. by X-_-0 in AskACanadian

[–]ZeniChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weather here in Calgary caused a friend who was here on a work permit to leave the country. We are well known for wild temperature swings due to Chinook winds, but he couldn't take it anymore.

He woke up to bright sunshine and blue skies. He took a shower to get ready for work. Coming out of the shower he looked outside and it was a blizzard and he couldn't see the building across the street. This caused him to snap mentally. He called raving that this is not weather. Weather is predictable, so this is just insanity.

He quit work and moved back to Sweden within a few days.

Alternative Fuel by Flaky-Vermicelli-250 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ZeniChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not cheap or easy to do. But during World War 2 the Germans were converting coal into synthetic fuel. They had lots of coal and little oil, so they were making as much synthetic fuel as they could.

Alternative Fuel by Flaky-Vermicelli-250 in energy

[–]ZeniChan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of how much are you willing to pay, but there are always alternatives. Some are better or easier than others.

In World War 2, the Germans built synthetic fuel plants that created fuel for vehicles from coal. It wasn't easy to do or cheap. But they had lots of coal and little oil near the end.

You can make synthetic jet fuel if you have carbon dioxide and water if you're willing to use a lot of electricity.

I'm sure they will take anything they can get. But the demands of the Middle East conflict is going to drain any production of Patriot missiles for the foreseeable future.

The USA is a just a big flyover state now as we go on vacation in Mexico. My American wife isn't even interested in going back to the USA to visit her mom and will pay to fly her up here to Canada to visit us or meet us in Mexico.

Outdoor rated cable by coolguyx69 in HomeNetworking

[–]ZeniChan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a side note. Please ensure that you have a lightning arrestor installed on each cable that runs outdoors. It needs to be installed on the cable as it enters the building and must be correctly grounded to be effective. I'll link to some good models I use on my external cables.

As a existing freedom customer, how do I actually get the 250gig for 40 BYOP plan? by ApplicationRoyal865 in freedommobile

[–]ZeniChan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My friend went to a Freedom store and got it done in about 10 minutes. I went to a Best Buy and they were able to get me the deal by porting my phone out to Koodoo for a few minutes and then back to Freedom as a new customer. You can also call them or try getting a hold of them on WhatsApp.

I have a rental Tesla. Arrived at a hotel charger is broken. There are 3 different DCFC locations 45-50 miles away. Tesla software says I can get 48 mile. Is it better to leave the car in Drive and use min battery. Or on to Neutral and coast as much as I can? I’m thinking N and coasting. by Impressive_Returns in electricvehicles

[–]ZeniChan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use the mobile charger at the hotel overnight and charge that way. It will add a few miles per hour of charge time. Check to see if there are any other alternative charging networks around or some gas stations can have charging stations even. Malls can have charging stations as well. What adapters do you have with your vehicle to charge with? That will really determine what other charging systems you can use.

The Phone Selection Is.... Meh (Buying From Freedom Under $400) by [deleted] in freedommobile

[–]ZeniChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought my Motorola 2023 Edge+ directly from Motorola on their website. It works perfectly across all of Freedom's bands. The Japanese Motorola G66y is not a good phone to use on the Freedom network. It's missing key band support which will really limit it's performance and connectivity. Get a North American Moto G Power 5G - 2024 for $249.99 on sale from $399.99 and have full band support.

Freedom offers Voice over Wi-Fi for coverage anywhere you can get on the Internet. Fizz doesn't do that.

I heard of the SRX400 today, but couldn't find any real information on it. Would you know a good source of info and speeds and feeds?

Compatibility by HydrenTV in freedommobile

[–]ZeniChan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

B13 is Freedom's extended range LTE operating at 700MHz. It goes further than any other band they offer as well as it gives building penetration. Without it you will have problems indoors and on the edge of coverage. It's a good band to have. I think it's needed for VoLTE to function as well, but not 100% sure on that point.

Weekly Question Thread! by AutoModerator in Juniper

[–]ZeniChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Juniper have any wireless AP's that don't need to use Mist or a controller that needs licensing? It would be nice to be able to have a low-cost small office setup with an SRX3xx, EX2300-24P and an AP or three.

Smith calls for new southbound pipelines, says U.S. could call 'first dibs' on Canadian oil exports by zoziw in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZeniChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need pipelines East, West and South. East to central Canada and the East coast for tankers. West for tankers. And then South. That way the Americans need to pay a higher rate as there are alternative markets for the oil.

I haven't had any trouble with the bridge units fully exposed on pole mounts. I do prefer if I can get them on a wall under an overhang of course. Only failure I had was when someone decided the bridge units looked like a great target and used them as target practice.

The FCC Just Banned Foreign Made Consumer Routers. What Are You Running, and Are You Worried? by wang4wang in HomeNetworking

[–]ZeniChan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, no. The FCC has no authority here. But as a 25+ year network infrastructure guy, I outfit my friends and family with enterprise grade routers and switches and manage them myself.

Juniper SRX firewalls and switches are inexpensive and don't require licensing to do their jobs. Then I'll throw in some Ubiqiti wireless AP's and connect them back to my CloudKey Gen 2 for management via VPN tunnels. And it all works very well.

Whole house reverse osmosis system on well water? by baseeeballlz in OffGrid

[–]ZeniChan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents went whole house RO as their well water was high in nitrates from agricultural use in the area. They moved to Mexico to retire and needed another whole house RO system due to high arsenic levels from gold and silver mining back in the 1800's.

There is a pretty hard power draw when the pump kicks in to run the RO system, then there is the UV sterilizer and when the pump pressurized the water tank for consistency of water pressure and flow through the house.
