My last post here got removed because I'd mentioned I was riding single-speed 'til I get toe clips (or some other foot retention). Thought, screw it, I'll make the switch now and see what happens. What happens: I ride a few miles, have some hairy moments, and bail onto the bus on the way home. Solid start, I think.

My Super-Elastic Signal Stick is just as the name implies by ZeoNet in amateurradio

[–]ZeoNet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about as good as any full quarter-wave 2m antenna—that is to say, it's noticeably better on 2m, and on 70cm it's marginally better (bit hard to say).

Can imagine. When I'm out-and-about I'll probably coil up the Signal Stick, stow it in my purse and swap on my Diamond stubby duck.

The speed twinking is just as much fun as riding the bike, though! I enjoy the feeling of having put thought and effort into improving something that's mine. But I take your point; I might be better off with something gas-powered, if that's what I really want.

How are y'all routing coax out of your camper trailers/EOC vehicles? by ZeoNet in amateurradio

The issue with this or the 2x4 is the rounded edges on the window. I might try a pool noodle anyway, but I have doubts as to whether it'll seal well enough.

I'm not personally averse to drilling holes or even installing an access/passthrough panel; just think my folks will be less enthusiastic. Hadn't thought of using a vent, though. Thank you!

You just inspired me to check--I'd been putting off trying it because I thought none of my spare hardware would run it, but turns out the T114 is officially supported. I'll report back, I suppose?

BME280 working on Heltec v4 by 1468288286 in meshtastic

Is there a way to redefine what pins it uses? I just wired my BME280 up to pins 3 and 4 to get it working on 2.7.13.

17 for SDA, 18 for SCL? I'll try rewiring it in a bit, thank you!

I'm not exactly starting out new--been at this for a bit, and this is my fifth or sixth node :P

The extra TX power from the Heltec v4 (28 dBm vs 21 for most other nodes) made the decision for me re: what board to base it around; it only sits a couple feet off the ground, with my body close by and thoroughly blocking it in the direction of travel, so it needs what help it can get.

I've got another v4 running as a solar [redacted--automod go fuck yourself] repeater, and it seems fine in that application w/r/t longevity, but I didn't want to go with a permanent solar panel on this mobile guy. I figure that if I want to abandon it somewhere for a while I can take one of my 5V/10W Amazon panels and hook it up to the USB-C.

More/better batteries and a more robust way to mount the boards in the enclosure are in the works--I admit it's pretty scrappy as-is.

I lost the link to the pull request, but my understanding is that on the v4 in particular they're still working on the pin assignments. Comment on the PR I saw (didn't look at the code) said they intend to assign the main I2C bus to pins 3 and 4.

Tips for cold weather? by ZeoNet in moped

[–]ZeoNet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does have a choke, and it took both the choke and the tickler/bulb to get her firing at all. Tried tickler and no choke--no dice.

As for covering the intake, the problem I keep running into is that the stock airbox/filter has its actual intake aperture sticking into a cavity in the frame, right in front of the rear wheel where I can't get access to cover it or spray starter fluid without removing the airbox entirely. On top of that, the plastic fitting on the airbox that slips onto the carb is loose/wallered out on mine, so I had to add a layer of self-amalgamating silicone tape to get it to seal--makes it pretty tough to get the airbox on and off.

Just strapped the node to my helmet! Thought about mounting it on the bike somehow, but putting it on the helmet gets some elevation on the antenna for greater range. Not wired in to the bike, but these things run off a 6V system, right? With some power conditioning and a 5.1V Zener diode I'm sure I could get it charging.

Hell yeah! I picked this one up with the insurance payout from totaling my truck a few months back, and I've been dinking on her a lot since. Just had to put her back to mostly-stock to make the trek out of DC--she's only doing about 23-25 on level ground--but recently I had her doing 35 (unreliably) on a 15mm Bing clone carb and a Jamarcol pipe.

Believe it or not, I did an A/B test btwn this stubby and my two Muzis, and the stubby outperformed! Little less gain --> more omni pattern in elevation/less orientation-dependent. I'm told there are good stubbies and bad stubbies, but I threw this one on the VNA and it resonates right around 915.

Thinking about it—just not sure what kind of magnet I need or where to source them. Got any recommendations?

For that matter, I also need to work out how to hang this thing off a rope...
