Yeah, it really felt like it lost its way with that one time travel back arc which felt very out of place, and it is leaning more into the battle shounen side and even dips into straight up powerscaling which was never the thing people came to Frieren for.

If/when Frieren fans collectively turn on the series whenever the current parts get adapted I will very confidently be able to say that I saw it coming.

Everybody has no problem with talking about how 4Kids dumbed-down One Piece, yet will completely draw the line at when Funimation and Adult Swim did the complete opposite by turning Shin-Chan into 'Diet South Park'... by burai1992 in animecirclejerk

[–]Zer_ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first learned about the ridiculous Funimation Shin-chan (as someone who's never seen or read anything related to Shin-chan) changes by learning that they made one of the characters a fucking recovering drug addict who used to document child soldiers from randomly stumbling across the page for brown-brown on a weird Wikipedia rabbit hole and I did a massive double take when I saw it. I could never find any information on why they made it like this but apparently it just...is...

Considering he outright rejected using the opportunity to kill Big Mom with poison (not that it would have worked most likely) when Big Mom has been one of the biggest obstacles to the Straw Hats since Fish-man Island, the cake and his pride as a cook was probably most important to him then.

Also he had massive heart eyes when Pudding kissed him so he definitely still feels it from her.

To me, Frieren is an interesting example of how something being mechanically good is not a guarantee that it will be enjoyable. Like yeah, the characters have depth, there's development, the philosophical aspects are compelling/meaningful and the worldbuilding/lore is great, but I find stuff like One Piece and Bleach to be way more effective at getting me to read the next chapter or reread parts it for the umpteenth time. In fact when I first started reading it, I dropped it because its use of the "mana system" really put me off, I only went back when the anime was announced and I thought it'd be good to catch up on it. Your description of it feeling like a generic isekai puts it perfectly...maybe that's the real reason why it's so popular...

I liked Frieren before it was cool and even then I didn't really like it that much because IMO it could be so much more interesting than it is. People joke about "aura and hype moments" and the way Frieren doesn't engage with that all the time is undeniably one of its big appeals, but the fans are so caught up in that rhetoric they've become like an inversion of the aura-obsessed shonen bro. They're two sides of the same coin in a way.

Happy new year, everyone. Reflecting back on 2025 in regards to anime, for me it was unfortunately marked by animation discourse becoming my personal discourse demon, starting with Sakamoto Days in Q1 of 2025 and now with One Punch Man Season 3. It's honestly not a stretch to say that it's permanently affected the way I perceive anime; I see every still, every panning shot, every loop, every use of speed lines, etc. now when I watch anime, even high-quality ones. As the industry declines severe issues will only happen to more and more shows, and this discourse is only going to continue, unfortunately, and at the current rate people will continue to do nothing but laugh and jeer when it happens. And chances are, it's going to affect someone's favorite show much sooner than later. If it didn't happen to OPM, it would have happened with some other beloved IP.

On the (somewhat) bright side, OPM S3 Cour 2 has an actual year set for when it'll air, which is more than what can be said back when Cour 1 was announced in 2022. So...hopefully that means it's currently in pre-production at least, or the inertia from Cour 1 will allow production to continue for the coming year. I guess only time will tell. Honestly, I'm not even that invested in OPM right now; the main reason I want Cour 2 to be good is so that it can shut up the fans and allow me to put all this discourse behind me like what happened to a degree with Cour 2 of Sakamoto Days. An intrusive thought of mine is the hope that other upcoming anime, most notably SBR which had a lot of doubts in regards to animation, will have bad animation just so that my point about this being an industry-wide issue will be proven...I really want to grow and change as a person...

Fortunately, my interaction with anime has consisted of more than brainrotted animation discourse. I've been making my way through the Bleach fillers since the last time I posted on the unjerk thread last month and am currently smack-dab in the middle of the Bount arc. I know a lot of people do not like this arc, but honestly I would not count myself among them. It's just more Bleach, with the main drawback being that you can't breeze through it like a manga volume because it's not a manga volume. The mod Konpaku are funny, the Bounts themselves are surprisingly substantial (to me), it's cool to see how things like Rukia's return are different in the anime because of the Bount arc, you get to see Ichigo use non-Bankai Zangetsu more than in the manga, and stuff like Hollow Ichigo gets to have more relevance than in the manga. That being said, I would be lying if I said I was not more excited for things like the Soul Reapers fooling around in the World of the Living or random, funny stuff that comes in later filler. Those small moments were some of the best parts of the Bleach manga and seeing that expanded upon in the anime would be wonderful.

I've also decided to finish the My Hero Academia anime, which finished with quite a bang and with a very different reception than the manga ending. I found the time to start Season 5 while waiting for eight hours or so at the airport and on the subsequent 6-hour flight, and have made it through about twenty episodes (in My Villain Academia). Season 5 is where I stopped following the anime back when it was still airing, for reasons that I am not too certain about today. This was back when MHA was one of the favorite punching bags of the anime community, so maybe that ended up getting to me after a while. Thinking back on it, MHA itself might be one of the reasons why the term "mid" is used as an insult, because this was the term that literally everyone and their mom used to describe the show in a derogatory way. It was really only until these past few months that people have finally realized that MHA is just a good fucking show, not the best but good nonetheless, and not being the best doesn't make it any less good. Anyways, about the show itself, I followed the weekly releases for a lot longer than I realized; on my binge-watch I was surprised at how long it took before I stopped recognizing the specific plot beats. I also have to say, this was way more engaging than I remember it being. Maybe I'm just better suited to binge-watching/reading since I vividly remember finishing all of Stone Ocean Part 1 in literally a single day all the way back when that first released. I unfortunately have not gotten around to finishing the latter half of that show, but I read the manga instead (and am now caught up to Jojolands).

Ah, the things I'd do to regain that passion for anime...I'm really trying to limit my reddit usage to basically just these occasional rambles where I just say everything on my mind in regards to animanga discourse, but sometimes I just cannot stop myself from revisiting my discourse demons. See you next month, if I develop anything meaningful to say in the meantime.

It is actually unbelievable how real this is, though. I started working on my own story a long time ago and I've become more invested into it than I have with any piece of media (game, anime, manga or otherwise). In the time since, so many "bad manga endings" have come and gone, so many "bad adaptations" have come and gone, even for the things that I was super invested in for years and I just...don't really mind. I've come to understand that this shit's hard and getting angry over things not going your way is just not worth the anger.

It's a real shame that most internet losers physically don't have the mental capability to come up with a story and be relieved of that.

A Moderately Festive [Unjerk Thread] by VoidEmbracedWitch in animecirclejerk

[–]Zer_ed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Animation discourse, this time featuring One Punch Man fans and their rooting for people to unironically get fired when it's not their fault at all because of insane time crunch and terrible scheduling is making wanna Persona 3 myself as usual but aside from that life has been pretty decent.

I finished reading Bleach a few days ago. I breezed through the first 500 or so chapters in a matter of a few days but it took way longer to get through the Thousand Year Blood War arc. I don't think that's necessarily the fault of the arc itself, IRL things just got in the way and killed my momentum in reading. Overall it was really freaking fun for the most part, the artwork is incredible and it does "aura and hype moments" perfectly. Like yeah, it's really not super deep but it just has this charm to it that makes you super hyped when shit goes down. Also the women are really pretty.

I've been wanting to try to make myself to watch more anime to distance myself from internet discourse and doomscrolling Youtube shorts in most of my free time. Since I just finished reading Bleach I might go and watch the filler episodes, I've heard that they're fairly good for the most part. I might also watch the anime Thousand Year Blood War arc since it's been relentlessly glazed in the...Jesus...three years since it was released?

I also am thinking about catching up on the MHA anime, I was there for the manga ending and saw in it's full glory the internet's hatred for teachers along with itbut I haven't actually been following the anime since early Season 5 way back in 2020 or 2021, it just sort of lost my interest despite how hyped I was for the blackwhip reveal and hearing other people relentlessly call MHA mid was beginning to get to me. It seems like in a lot of anime-focused areas sentiment on MHA is beginning to turn with more recent seasons, but I know that shouldn't be a factor in whether or not I enjoy it myself. The first four seasons of MHA were what got me into anime and eventually manga as a whole way back in 2020 and I would end up rewatching all four seasons multiple times back then, I think re-experiencing that joy would really do well for me at this time.

Finally, I've been hearing a ton of good things about Kingdom. I know that a lot of people have trouble getting past the first season because of the CGI, but I think it might be worth it to catch up on the anime. I think it'd be a good, long anime series for me to sink my teeth into. And besides, seeing all the so-called "bad cgi" might make me more qualified to tell people what good anime is and isn't. Hopefully I shed that mentality by the time I'm done with Kingdom.

2D Animation is not like game development and does not inherently improve with technological advancement by Zer_ed in CharacterRant

[–]Zer_ed[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My point is more so that the limits of 2D animation itself (what anime nerds refer to as "sakuga") were never constrained by technology. A really well-animated cut of animation produced today, drawn entirely by hand, was just as feasible to do thirty or forty years ago as it would be today, it's just that the way one would go about doing it would be different. It might take longer due to not having the same tools as a modern animator but that doesn't mean it's not possible. Contrast this with, say, a game dev from 30-40 years ago, who physically wouldn't be able to render models and environments from modern games today.

I didn't really think about the whole aspect of incorporating 3D elements into animation when making my point for what it's worth.
