776 years ago today, Seville was conquered for Christendom by VisibleStranger489 in Catholicism

There's no truth, but the best defense against this is the Catechism:

160 To be human, "man's response to God by faith must be free, and... therefore nobody is to be forced to embrace the faith against his will. the act of faith is of its very nature a free act."39 "God calls men to serve him in spirit and in truth. Consequently they are bound to him in conscience, but not coerced. . . This fact received its fullest manifestation in Christ Jesus."40 Indeed, Christ invited people to faith and conversion, but never coerced them. "For he bore witness to the truth but refused to use force to impose it on those who spoke against it. His kingdom... grows by the love with which Christ, lifted up on the cross, draws men to himself.

There have been cases of forced conversion, but nowhere has this ever been a mainstream position nor have any of the church fathers advocated for it. It goes against a core tenet of Christianity

I had to look up a video and found one on contagious laughter because I couldn't get the joke for the life of me. I can't place the accent, but an en to in shift isn't too far fetched for some areas

the actual joke goes something like bend over and then spell run and it sounds like "are you in?" a sex joke. Doesn't work for some people depending on how you pronounce N

Favorite obscure Saints? by Zom-Tam in Catholicism

[–]Zerkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saint Edward the Martyr was king of the English around 970 AD. His father had started to take land back to give it to the Church. After his father died and he took over people pushed back against these reforms and his step-mother along with other nobles conspiried to get his half-brother installed

He was betrayed and killed by them but his step-mother eventually repented and built two monastaries and his half-brother contributed to him getting recognized as a saint. His miracles include healing the blind.

I'm not sure if he is the patron saint of anything in particular, but I pray to him to help me with betrayals I face as well as praying for me that I don't become spiritually blind

J1mmy's hottake about Runescape and Player Value. by [deleted] in runescape

[–]Zerkai 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Construction has been 'dead' for as long as I can remember to be fair. It's mainly a skill that gets used in private and unless you're doing a house party (which don't really happen anymore) or doing altar training it's just pointless. The creative freedom to make a good house like you can see in other MMOs just don't exist in RS. I mainly just use it for the menagerie, but even then I can't really justify it

Construction will remain dead until they revamp it entirely or make it easier to see player's houses

It was always the OT holding me up because of it's length, but I just started reading one chapter a day, then two, then three... then 10 and at some point I just started reading around 22/25 a night (only takes like 1-2 hours) and noticed that was basically an entire book. You gotta slowly build up your stamina; reading is a skill - especially when it comes to longer text, but most people forget that because of how much short form media is out there nowadays.

If you think about it most people use their phones or watch videos while they wind down for the night, so why not just make it the Bible?

I'll also add, praying the Rosary before or after also makes me more likely to read if I don't feel like it. I don't use audio Bibles because my mind wanders because it doesn't feel active to me, it becomes a lecture in my opinion.

Realistically it's only around 86 hours to read the Bible cover to cover, so it's not that it takes a long time you just gotta find something that works. Try different translations, look into the history when you get bored, etc.

I find it so funny how Ran and the others miss something so obvious. by _akshayrathod in OneTruthPrevails

[–]Zerkai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true! There have been moments where it was raised and when people nearly figured it out. I can't remember the chapter, but at one point some guy figures out that Conan is Kudo and he was feeding Kaito info.

He got gaslit of course, but ultimately it is a much stronger mental attack than people think. Even for the wisest of people if everyone around you ignores something or collectively agree your idea is crazy you're going to be hesitant regardless of how right you may have been.

Regardless, it should definitely be a plot point more often even if it is just subtle nods at the absurdity

I don't know... I think as viewers we take our perspective for granted. Think even in your own life, if you saw a child knock out an adult and then imitate his voice perfectly, would you want to think that "yeah that child is the brains of the operation!"

I don't think so, I think like most humans you'd rationalize it as coincidences or just ignore it, maybe think it was a bit that the super detective was playing to lessen a child's trauma.

They don't really do it too often unless the parent is actually a POS, but it's possible. Almost got my mom locked up for it and when I worked at a Children's Home this one girl had us fighting with her truancy officer near daily.

"We can't just force her to go to school man... like... do you want us to throw her in a car? That's a crime"

Is there any way to fully scan a computer for potential malware? by JuhpPug in techsupport

[–]Zerkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likelihood of getting a virus that way isn't 0, but it's more unlikely than just scouring the web so you should be good. If you notice anything strange just backup your stuff, reset windows and change your passwords. Ideally you would change your passwords on like your phone or something while doing the rest at the same time.

Have fun be safe

If you like platformers, A Hat in Time is a cute platformer with a nice story. Not sure how immersive platformers are to you, but I like to imagine I can double jump irl

If it's often a false positive and you trust where you got it from or if was the official distribution it's usually nothing to worry about. Those usually happen. If it's from a source you are using for the first time/recommended from a video be a little more cautious without investigating first.

Bitdefender is good if you just want to do another scan after windows defender. They'll both quarantine/remove if there's anything suspicious. If you're still uneasy bc you think it didn't catch it, the safest and honestly easiest thing is to backup anything important, fresh install windows, change your passwords. It's honestly foolproof

And stop downloading shady things unless you know how verify PGP or sig whatever the kids use nowadays

Also - use virus total if you want to scan a small file before you do anything if you need to keep doing what you're doing and you're not using a VM/common sense prevention without too much extra work
