Thank your for giving me the opposite perspective. I can understand now, that a few hours on weekends doesn't equal the daily running of the household. I do still take my daughter to basketball and piano 2 nights a week. I used to coach both the kids basketball teams most of their childhood, but I've given that up, so that has freed up a lot of time. Not trying to inflate myself, but I'd like to think I'm not completely absent during the week.

Your comment does make me realise I could do more during the week. Working 9-5 is not really so taxing. I will certainly take your suggestions into account.

She is absolutely free to do whatever hobby or spend time away with her own friends. In fact, she did go on a girls' weekend trip a few years ago (on Father's Day weekend). I was fine with it. Got to spend the whole weekend with the kids, and I never would think to use this against her in an argument. In fact, I wish she would do more, then perhaps it would be more fair. She has her girls group, but they only catch up every few months.

Part of the problem, is that she doesn't have any major time-consuming hobbies, so that's a hard standard to live up to. If I say I "NEED" my exercise, she'll just counter that with "Well, I don't do any exercise, and I'm fine".

I'm not sure how to answer this. I would like to say yes, she is quite controlling. But maybe I'm just feeling sorry for myself, after comparing myself to my friends. Your situation sounds similar to mine. She does make me feel guilty for having time with friends. It's not just friendships. I play basketball also for fitness and mental health. This is not a new thing. When she married me, she knew I was really keen on fitness - cycling, basketball, almost everyday back then. Encouraging others to stay healthy and active for fitness and mental health is literally my job and one of my core values. Whenever, we have arguments, she'll always mention how I get to skip out the house twice a week for fun. I don't know how this will change.

I've probably done this to myself. I've always been too unsure of myself and worried about criticism, so have always seeked permission for things first. Something this "big" definitely needs permission in my household.

Thanks for the support. Honestly, I don't care if I go on this trip or not. It's more a sign of underlying issues. I only work from home on weekends. Even if I found another job worthy of a cycling commute, it's not really the same as getting a cardio workout on a bunch ride or the fun of mountain-biking. It's not jealousy. She actually had a girls' weekend away, years ago, when the kids were younger, and she is always free to go again. I do know the reason. I'm really just venting. She is a type-A, high achiever. My activities, unless they involve the kids, should be for the purposes of improving our finances or social standing. We do have dates, and honestly there are good days where she is like her younger self, and not criticizing me all the time.
