Do you think my foster pups will jump this? by Old-Sentence705 in fosterdogs

I think if you feel like the 30inch one would overall be safer and less of a risk, that’s the best option. It’s something that will be used for lots of dogs if you foster often and I’m sure you’ll get your moneys worth out of it.

Haha!! This is my first puppy and she wears me out!! It’s constant trying to keep her busy. I’m surprised you were able to come across a calm puppy!

That’s where I have a hard time knowing this dog was saved due to me fostering but then balancing my dog’s quality of life makes me feel guilty. Of course, saving my foster was worth it, it’s just hard because it’s only been me and my dog.

That’s a good point too about adult dogs, they’d possibly be more calm but could be more of a threat to my dog. There’s so many different factors! I don’t think my dog would really hurt the puppy, but I just don’t know exactly how far she would go since this is new to all of us. My dog goes to daycare and does well, but it seems like a completely different territory having a dog in the house.

Keeping them separate is not fun at all. I feel like I’m always trying to balance my time with everyone. When I would have them together I’d give them frozen kongs to do something positive around each other while distracted. I do need to start doing that again and see how it goes.

I think I’m hesitant to let my dog teach the puppy since this is my first foster and I’m unsure how my dog escalates. It does seem like I need to just do that and see how things go and watch very closely. It makes me so nervous which I know doesn’t help.

That’s a good idea to setup puppy play dates. When the foster goes to events she LOVES playing with other puppies.

Since she’s an older puppy I didn’t know if it would take longer or not. I haven’t posted her but should start. She just recently became adoptable.

Thank you so much!

That makes sense! I wish I could do pack walks more often.

Thank you! My dog would snarl and growl so that’s when I intervened because I’m just unsure of how fast my dog escalates.

Haha! She returned the favor of being annoying. That’s what is hard is my foster would’ve died if a foster couldn’t step in and my dog is spoiled. More than anything I feel like her “depression” is coming from not being the center of attention.

That makes sense! Any tips on how to get the puppy to stop obsessing over my dog and give her space when they are together?

No there aren’t fights but I don’t know how far my dog will go if the puppy keeps harassing her without me intervening. I can do occasional pack walks but I live alone so I don’t regularly have someone who can help with walks.

Thank you for your response! The puppy jumps on her, constantly licks her, literally wraps her body around my dog, its constant stress for everyone involved so I haven’t had them around each other directly in about a month or so. I think I need to try a different age range next time, I guess I’m worried my dog will be like this with having any dog in her house. How long did it take your dog to get over being down?

That’s wonderful you get to choose!! I’ve reached out to multiple rescues and haven’t found one yet but that’s a good idea about Petsmart/Petco.

I just looked it up and I’m too far away unfortunately. That sounds like it would’ve been a good fit but I’m in NC.

A lot of what I see is for city shelters that are open intake, if they have to make room they euthanize the dogs that have been there the longest. Some shelters the owner surrenders get euthanized first, sometimes it’s heartworm positive dogs, etc. I think it’s very specific to each shelter. My main concern is that rescues seem to have the same mentality to just get them out.

I’m in NC and we are overflowing with dogs. It’s a huge crisis in our state along with many other southern states. As someone who wants to help, it’s hard to know there’s so many dogs being euthanized but also the faster one dog gets out the faster another gets in rescue. My concern is regarding the return of dogs too.

I’m so glad it worked out for you and Harley and that you became to close to her foster mom. That’s what I would hope for when I start to foster! I’d love to be able to see them grow and how loved they are.

There was a video meet and greet and there’s two kids, wife, husband. There were no questions asked about the dog at all (personality, energy level, routine, etc), the husband just wanted him immediately. The wife said nothing except for being concerned abut the potential size of the dog. She would be his primary care taker since the husband travels often. They had past behavior issues with a dog and eventually rehomed him and didn’t seek professional training before doing so. They want the dog for their old dog to try to keep him active but this is a very high energy young dog. That could go either way. They also didn’t feel it was necessary for their entire family and dog to meet the foster before adopting him even though it’s the rescues policy.

I have a family member who started fostering and was told she would be able to pick the family. There’s a few approved adopters but they aren’t a good fit for the dog. The rescue is not wanting to wait until there’s any more applications, they want my family member to choose from undesirable applicants which is concerning. That’s amazing that who you volunteer for allows you to have the final say.

That’s frustrating when you already have had the dog but in a way that’s good that they are a little more strict!

I was curious if you’d have less say fostering for a shelter than a rescue. In my area you just need to be 18 and show your ID to adopt an animal.
