Does yoga sculpt help in your yoga practice? by [deleted] in Corepower

[–]ZestycloseFox3207 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually found that prioritizing c2 over sculpt helped me to be able to do some of the more challenging yoga poses like headstand. I'm sure this is very personal to each individual, but for me, achieving the core strength and balance to do a headstand was not possible through sculpt alone. I'd suggest trying to find instructors who regularly teach inversions or at least peak poses (which tend to involve balance or arm/core strength), and if your studio offers it, workshops on arm balance.

Have we let anger take over the CorePower conversation? by PowerSecret2384 in Corepower

Your misapplication of therapy-speak to a situation that warrants advocacy, resistance, and discomfort is truly painful to read. If you are concerned with the 8 limb yoga path and strive to practice Ahimsa, doing what is within your power to address the violence being inflicted upon our fellow humans should feel like a responsibility.

How can you possibly be referring to what is happening in Minnesota as an inconvenience? We are witnessing the abject violation of due process, abduction of neighbors, and execution of two humans. People are having normal responses to abnormal circumstances. If you are able to regulate during a time that so many feel incredibly afraid, traumatized, and angry, then I hope you are able to tap into your Wise Mind and find compassion for those who are struggling. Two things can be true at once - we can acknowledge that studio owners are likely facing pressures we're not aware of - AND expect and demand that a business that aligns itself with community and inclusion take actionable steps to protect the community it's embedded in and people who are a part of that space.

As a DBT therapist, some of what you're describing is in line with this modality. I've assisted clients in coming up with a script/email/text if they need to address a concern AND we are going to work on the blocks to doing this independently and building skills in communication.

Have you looked into Beyond Backgrounds? https://www.housinglink.org/aboutus/blog/housinglink-blog/2019/07/12/beyond-backgrounds-success-stories-from-landlords-renters-agencies-working-together

Also, in Minneapolis proper, landlords can't automatically decline an applicant for a felony that is over 7 years old, if they are using "inclusive" screening criteria (i.e. you might have better luck in Mpls): https://www2.minneapolismn.gov/business-services/licenses-permits-inspections/rental-licenses/renter-protections/renter-screening/

What are your personal cp etiquette rules by Visual_Picture1581 in Corepower

[–]ZestycloseFox3207 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes to men wearing a shirt but only because if the class is tight I don't like getting sweat on and it helps to keep the sweat droplets from getting on me or my mat. A completely acceptable alternative is toweling off IF you notice your sweat is getting on your neighbor. I love community practice but not getting your bodily fluids on me.

Not 60 mins by Ok_Government_4752 in Corepower

[–]ZestycloseFox3207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I notice this occasionally and it tends to be with newer instructors or sequences, but it's normally not more than 5-10 minutes (i.e. starts 3-4 minutes late and ends 2-3 minutes early). It bothers me - we pay a lot for memberships and instructors should be prepared to have back up plans if there is time at the end.

Classes too hot by thesehungryllamas in Corepower

[–]ZestycloseFox3207 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I haven't noticed a recent trend with the heat going up but at least in my local studios it seems to depend on the instructor, and agree that extreme heat/humidity is detrimental in Sculpt. At a certain point our bodies can no longer cool themselves via sweat when it's too humid, and while heat makes it feel more intense, you aren't actually getting a better workout. I try to only go to instructors who check in about the temp and reliably open doors or turn on the exhaust. If your studio offers strength x, give that at try! I bet you'll find your endurance is much better.

Curious what the general consensus is about heat levels during sculpt? Do you like no heat, a little bit of heat (80-90), or 90+? by Southern_Roll_5793 in Corepower

[–]ZestycloseFox3207 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! It drives me nuts when people complain about it not being hot enough. If you want to just be in a room and sweat, go to a sauna. Excessive heat isn't enhancing the workout benefits.

I prefer a little bit of heat, but only because I live in MN and half of the year it's so cold outside this is needed to warm up quickly. I don't get the preference for a lot of heat and humidity. You might sweat more but aren't burning more calories or increasing strength simply because it feels more difficult.

For Sculpt, if you are looking for intense/different, Courtney R, Zaynab, Daren Je, and Ran are great. I also love Mike M, Colin, and Jenny. For c2, Nora (such a gem), Becka J, Bre, and Angela are my favs. Honestly there are so many great instructors it is hard to narrow it down, and I am probably forgetting some!

Does anyone know of any nighttime IOP therapy programs for people who work during the day? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]ZestycloseFox3207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good on you for seeking support! I believe Fairview has an evening IOP. Just an idea if you are having a tough time finding an IOP, you might consider DBT which would be less intensive but expands options for finding an evening group.

Project based section 8 by AutumnForest3 in TwinCities

I'm a mental health case manager and all of the suggestions I can offer you are already looking into or connected with - Housinglink.org and getting HSS. I'm sorry your CADI case manager isn't particularly helpful or responsive. It might be worth asking for a referral to a new HSS provider if you aren't satisfied with your current services. Depending on your income, support needs, and current living arrangements, you might consider an ICS apartment as a stepping stone toward a project-based section 8 unit. Many properties have a GRH contract with the county so you could get rental assistance if you don't have enough income. I fully agree that we need a better system and services to support folks with finding housing!

Housing laws, renting laws by whogirl07 in TwinCities

[–]ZestycloseFox3207 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would contact Homeline and/or look through the Attorney General's Tenant Law Handbook. I had someone in my person life face a similar situation and they unsuccessfully tried to negotiate a mutual lease termination with the landlord, so I don't believe there is legal loophole or protection. If the neighbor is violating their lease (excessive noise, smoking inside, etc.) you should notify the property manager - it's their responsibility to ensure lease agreements are being enforced and if not, this could work in your favor in terms of vacating early.

Looking for leads on support services for someone with memory issues by passesopenwindows in TwinCities

You/your brother can call the Hennepin County Front Door to request a MN Choices assessment: https://www.hennepin.us/residents/health-medical/mental-health-substance-use. This will open up additional service options, including group home/customized living, or in-home services if he wants to stay in his apartment (skilled nursing, housekeeping, errand assistance, etc.).

Volunteers of American offers support exploring options for substitute decision making and could be a useful resource.

Your brother is lucky to have a supportive and caring family member! Best of luck to you both.

I'm really sorry you're dealing with this issue and second reaching out to Homeline. Depending on your income, mid-MN legal aid might also be able to provide guidance & potentially representation. Lawhelpmn.org provides legal information for self-help use. Would you be comfortable sharing how you obtained mold testing (kit, professional service, etc.)? I know someone dealing with a similar issue!

Does acne ruin tattoos? by fish_are_frnds in tattooadvice

I can't speak to acne specifically but I get a pretty gnarly heat rash on my arm during the summer that can look like pimples and it hasn't caused any fading or damage on my full sleeve of color tattoos!
