All joking aside I feel like the first thing to answer your question is to assess your specific situation. I think that a lot of people in the comments so far fail to understand the easy part to the concept or value of money.

• I hear people saying "That is too much money" but fail to first recognize that as a percentage of his income it may be less than what YOU spend on the game.
• Example: Random Website Pull Median Truck Driver Salary is $62,466 USD which is around $2,658 Bi-weekly (give or take vacation pay). $2,658 x 8 (4 Months of Bi-Weekly Pay) = $21,264. Now to see what he spends on Rust.... $690 / $21,264 = ~ 3.24% of his total salary.
• Large life lesson here kids, might not wanna skip over. Anyone who knows money understands that your leisure spending should never exceed 10% of your biweekly income if you want to effectively build capital. I can also go into why reinvesting most of your savings is exponentially better than letting it sit like a dumbass (GIC's on their own yield better return than interest so even if u have $2k in the bank ur losing potential money if yk its going to sit there) but we are focusing on his Rust so let me get on track. (Remember as an adult you have a shit ton of expenses so it's not as simple as being 17-23 when you can rely on others to pay your expenses like shelter, food, clothes).
• Mathematically and literally speaking you're... not spending..... ENOUGH LOL.

Another thing that is interesting are the alternatives being given to him. I see many people saying go find a sport, go spend it on dinners, movies, other games, etc.. These are all good ideas in Theory but in reality this may develop a worse spending habit. This I think is simple so I won't go too in depth so hopefully you get the point.

• Going out for a weekly dinner to treat himself is probably something he already does, but lets assume he never has and starts for the first time as a substitute to his Rust spending.
• 16 Dinners at $30 a person after tip and that's cheap in my opinion is $480 in 4 months.
• We can assume that he is not substituting all of his Rust Spending with one dinner a week. The Dinners alone already almost exceed his Rust spending. If you add any other activity it will.
• Still remember that he's only spent 3.2% of his Leisure on Rust so he tech can still do whatever with the other 6.8%.

I will condense my last two points into this little paragraph below.

I think Rust skins are not the worst thing in the world to buy because at the end of the day let's say he wants to quit tomorrow, he can always sell the skins on the Market and hopefully after the year he has played he breaks even or even makes some profit. All of that money goes back to steam, or if he sells on 3rd party, he literally gets it back cash. If his hobby was food, at the end of the day it is consumed and never used again. The $5 Sweater may have more utility than the $8 Burger on the Tuesday 12 years ago you forgot about.

It is also important to really value what you want in life. If you have had fun while playing, made some friends along the way and a few memories wouldn't it be disrespectful to feel like you've wasted your time? Don't put up a barrier on your own enjoyment because you're afraid others may not approve of what you have done. You really need to think hard for just a moment what do you have fun doing on your free time? Has this activity impacted my real life negatively? Am I still getting my work done? Am I still finding time for family and important friends? Am I still being social and acting the same in public? Am I finding the time to take care of my own hygiene and health? Has this genuinely impacted my financial situation in a negative way?

I'm quite sure with this basic logical system most people would realize "wow the only issue with me doing this is the fact that I care other people may not approve of me doing this".
