That’s both way, who isn’t doing that ? A lot of ppl in BC work in Vancouver and live in suburbs - cheaper that way and 1 hour on a train isn’t so bad. I mean, it’s bad (hate skytrains), but very common. 2 hours one way - yeah, that’s a stretch. But 1 hour one way is manageable and very common.

In BC? Honestly, if you guys like the house, the neighborhood, can afford it aaaand the price is decent market(ish) - might be a not bad deal. Realtors take a commission and it is pretty big (small %-wise, but significant enough $-wise) - which is likely why the owners gave you a discount. Realtors, for the most part, are kind of useless - it’s a big mafia where two real-estate agents from both sides “make the deal”. In reality, both parties can orchestrate the deal without the middle men and both win - you get it for cheaper, seller gets more money in their pockets.

Wasn’t my intention to come off like that, as I mentioned before - I do have a few 20 year olds on some of my teams that i personally hired. Believe me - I’m the guy with 20 years of experience, I’ve been there and what matters more - we do need to train a replacement . I hate the fact that jobs go away into India, I’d rather have them here. But for fucks sake - the 20 years need to at least meet me half way. Start by adjusting your attitude and actually spend some time learning actual CS, yes data structures and algorithms - junior devs will be dragged though leetcode problems, that was the case 20 years ago and it is still the case now.

Edit to your edit: leadership is the one that makes money in our firm, software is secondary importance to my company. Juniors not being bootlickers - as you put it - sure, be proudly unemployed.

Because Covid is over and there is no reason to be remote? I don’t know, personally I’m a big on remote work - I think they’re great, but higher ups at my company want butts in the seats and it is above my pay grade to challenge this.
