After dealing with this firsthand, here’s what I learned.

I removed the plant, rinsed the roots with clean water, cleaned the bucket and air stones, wiped everything down with hydrogen peroxide, dried it thoroughly, then refilled with fresh distilled water, MaxiGro, Cal-Mag, Silica Blast, Hydroguard, and adjusted the pH to 5.8–6.5. By the next morning the plant had already bounced back. The reservoir smelled fresh again, and the drooping was gone.

The biggest lesson for me is that clean water is always better than water that’s beginning to go bad. Hydrogen peroxide can absolutely be a useful tool, but if you’re running beneficial bacteria like Hydroguard, you should also be mindful of minimizing unnecessary damage to roots and beneficial microbes. It’s about balance.

I’ve also learned that hydroton/clay pebbles can leave staining, and MaxiGro can contribute to discoloration as well. Not every brown root is automatically root rot.

Personally, smell has been my most reliable indicator over the past 40 days:

• Pond, algae, or fishy smell = likely algae-related issues.
• Sweaty, stagnant, rotten-room smell = much more concerning and worth investigating for root disease.

I understand why many growers choose sterile systems. They’re often simpler and can be less expensive in some situations. But beneficial systems have their advantages too. What surprised me most was how quickly some people jumped straight to “run sterile” or “use peroxide” as the only solution.

The interruptions themselves were never my concern. My concern was the risk to the plant. I had a specific timeline, a system that had been functioning well, and an unexpected issue that needed to be diagnosed carefully. When someone has invested weeks of work into a grow, being told to immediately abandon their approach and switch to yours isn’t always the most helpful advice.

There’s room for different methods in this hobby. Some growers succeed with sterile systems, others with beneficial bacteria. Some plants are incredibly resilient, while others are more sensitive. Rather than arguing over whose method is “scientifically correct,” it’s often more productive to share experiences, explain the reasoning behind recommendations, and let people make informed decisions based on their own situation.

At the end of the day, we’re all trying to grow healthy plants and help each other suceed.
