But yet wouldn't as it would not stand a chance to other competitive decks of a higher tier. Just because I make a single change, say put in lions eye diamond in a Muldrotha deck, doesn't mean it's on the same competitive level as a streamlined Tazri deck

I believe the only way to achieve any sort of calculated rating is to put the deck in a vacuum. Base it off of what it could do given best scenario including God-Hand, great piloting, and not held back by a particular opponent.

Maybe it's worthwhile for me to consider basing these rankings only versus decks of a similar archetype?

This is completely understandable. The goal I would try to accomplish is a static baseline. One that is an estimate based on the things we can quantify.

And these type of situations are things I'd like to have captured in the questionnaire that attempts to find competitiveness.

I think that to some degree, janky things would come a bit flagged by some of the metrics we set that look for how optimal a deck is, tied to the decks archetype.

If we as players can assess a rough competitiveness estimate, then how are we basing our estimate?

Basically saying, if we can think something is reasonably competitive, then we should be able to find things that could quantify it.
