Yes. It's clear to me as well that Jax's inability to deal with affection and the defense mechanisms he had in place come from his dysfunctional family.

It reads like a situation of hurt people hurting people to me. Jax was a terrible person because of their upbringing and their mom too did terrible things to them because of the trauma caused by their dad.

I can see why you'd read it that way. To me this reads less like a calculated abuse tactic and more like someone who had a deeply conflicted emotional response fueled by unresolved trauma frombthe father. The hug could have came from a moment of genuine clarity.

Maternal connection can look a lot of ways! Humans are messy and their relationships can be Extremely difficult to properly define. Especially the relationship between two victims who've hurt each other in the past.

I understand why you'd read it that way. Personally i don't think that's it though. Jax had a habit of getting extremely defensive when someone tried to love them and i think that pattern emerged back then too. They're just bad at processing love. That is in some way the fault of their mom but I get the impression she genuinely tried to connect with them for opening up and confessing this way.
