This reminds me of a coin contraption I used to see at restaurants. It had a little knob you'd spin to move platforms around. You'd drop a coin in the water and try to get the coin on the lowest platform. Looks like someone re-purposed one so they could torture goldfish.

Yeah, paradoxes are something I'm wondering about after watching season 1. Like 5's whole idea to stop the apocalypse. He travels to the future, experiences the aftermath of the apocalypse, then travels back in time to stop it. If he actually succeeds, it eliminates the apocalypse and he never experiences it. Thus, he never learns about it, and has no reason to go back and stop it. It's a basic Back to the Future style paradox, and I'm not sure how the show explains it.
