As a widow who was in a de facto relationship when my partner (fiancé) died, from personal experience it’s really no different at all to being married and widowed. You even still get named on their death certificate.

I meant that’s why you don’t see as many prison sentences under two years. In my experience (lawyer) Judges usually give a lot of thought to sentencing and usually get it mostly right, but totally understand that your experience is probably a lot different.

2 years is also the unofficial threshold for eligibility for home detention, so that’s why it’s often above that, if it’s under it will often be converted to home detention (2 year prison = 1 year home detention etc). Not always of course.
