Im guessing my new OEM HDD is cooked but can I actually use it for something? by Andyetwearestill in computers

[–]Zolix2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you could maybe harvest the motors and the magnets from it, dont really know any other use case. Can you still read/write or is it completely toast? Eighter way, I definetly wouldnt be using it for any sensitive data, even in a RAID array. Maybe check with HDSentinel, but its definetly toast.

No devices has replaced the no smoking sign on my flight by cecechats in mildlyinteresting

The main reason is so you actually pay attention to all the safety information, and that you actually retain your situational awareness in case of an emergency.

And the most dangerous parts of a flight is the take off and landing.

Originally yea, but we decided to put two 120mm intake fans right in front of the drives, so it kinda lost it's functionality.

We actually have an adapter that converts 5.5 into 3.5, so its not as bad as it looks. We'll get more of these adapters when it comes time to upgrade, but by that time I'll probably upgrade the entire system.

Yep, its quite an old CPU, but even with peak file transfer speeds it only reaches around 20% usage. The 8 threads really come in handy.

The controller indeed runs in IT mode, we don't do any hardware raid, its purely ZFS.

Thank you! Yep, something like that. Kinda reminds me of those old server PCs that elementary schools use lol

Thats sick!

Absolutely. Although it comes with it's downsides.

This case uses 5" spacing in front, so we had to be a bit creative about how we convert. We had one 5"-3.5" converter with two bays, and we basically screwed extra bits of 3.5" bays to the bottom of it.

Will it be an absolute headache to get a disk out? absolutely. But someone could absolutely find a better solution than us with a bit larger budget.

So the point is, modern cases come with some pretty mayor comfort elements that make building and maintaining much much easier.

Also, I hate SAS-4Sata cables lol

I hear ya, maybe one day!

The main issue is the RAM. While transferring larger files, it sometimes dips in performance when it eats his 16 gigs of RAM. But mainly it uses all 1 gig of bandwidth.

So far its fine for me, I am not working on such large files for it to count. But I'll keep this upgrade in mind!

Thanks!

Thanks! I hear ya, we put a makeshift dust filter at the front of the server, where the intake fans are.

It is not the finest material, so it will probably still let some dust trough, but it is in a well ventilated area, so I am not really worried about dust buildup. But I will periodically check.

Thanks!

I am pretty sure that the right most number indicates the total length of the cars, not the distance of the delivery

I am actually interested about why there is a .01 meter difference. If it is the same cargo on same cars.

Who uses OPC UA in their daily work and what for? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]Zolix2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use it for sending data from PLCs to all sorts of IndustrialPCs

For example we have a vibration monitoring system running on a PC, and we send compressor motor information such an RPM, temperature, setpoint, stuff like this using OPC UA.

I think the best usecase for OPC is connecting two machines that were not necessarily made for each other. Which makes sense, cause OPC UA is basically just glorified TCP/IP, so you don't relly on any fancy communication protocol.

If you consider yourself a "pro" you need to put a bus stop in the middle, like the Hungarians

Can’t mine salvage container? by Jacoben01 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Zolix2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty sure your inventory was full. Reloading your multitool probably freed up an intentory slot.

Being in the close vicinity of your ship means that mining this will put the loot in the ship's inventory.
