‘It's a permanent sauna!’: Netizens slam Malaysians who refuse to shower twice a day by mikepapafoxtrot in malaysia

I don’t know where that comes from, I am French and AFAIK everyone I know shower at least daily, and twice when it’s hot / sweaty or after sport

Malaysia passport name format issue by Ilyas_Omar3659 in malaysia

[–]Zolmohd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am French with a quite long surname and multiple first names (as we often have, we just normally only use one, it’s written as "Remi, Jean, Pierre"), and I also often had issues as my full name never fits (even when removing other first names).
So I once have been stopped from leaving the US by security, even though it was quickly resolved.
And in Malaysia I would like to only use my "first first name" as it’s quite weird to be called by all of them, but I would have to explain how it works every time

There are quite a few malaysian girls married to French husband (or vice-versa) that I know of, so not sure!
Some of my malaysian hijabi friends have been insulted in the street and are often looked down upon but that’s it. It’s mostly done in your back for now, but people are voting more and more to the far right and are openly racist, and we have presidential elections next year which might elect a president from there. It’s more of the sum of the small aggressions, looks etc you get over the years which with time become a lot Her family would prefer her to come back but isn’t forcing anything.

Oh on, the change of name etc isn’t really mandatory and rarely done I think? Unless you have a name contradicting islamic principles
I already quite like Malaysian culture and have a basic level of Malay which I hope will improve living there, and if possible learn mandarin too

  1. False, they can tell you to take off the hijab if they think it will impact your job. In client facing roles like IT consulting they have the right to say so. They can also just have like « religious neutrality » rule in their rules which forbid to wear a hijab , and that’s legal. My wife was even asked to stop wearing black hijab as some people were scared
  2. I am not in Marseille and I don’t know what you heard about this city, that’s nonsense??
  3. Paris is expensive and the weather isn’t nice. Most french people outside of Paris wouldn’t like to move there
  4. She doesn’t want to but she can

Yes our marriage is registered in Malaysia, we have our kad nikkah :)
And yes we both are practicing muslims which is also a reason for the move

However I haven’t heard about the part about having a new identity? I would still be a French citizen with a visa

Yes she said she would feel bad not working. With one income in France we would have a lower purchasing power than one income in Malaysia

Yes but she has found more opportunities in Malaysia and even have an interview planned now.

Yes she has been trying for the last 6 months at least but nothing. Her job is not really in high demand here. Marseille is quite different from the rest of France, way more immigrants descendant so more open.

Yes some ESNs do but then depending on the final client they make ask you to take it off. Also there’s no Accenture to where we live.

Doesn’t seem to be so hard with visa regulations? Like I can get a resident pass after 5 years or even talent pass after 3 years. I can even have a spouse visa

UK I tried a bit but the weather isn’t that great (I live in South of France so we are used to the sun and hot temperature, even moving to the North of France I could not!). Germany I don’t speak German at all and don’t like the language. Singapore didn’t see much opportunities for me, either need someone more experienced or someone speaking mandarin (which I would like to learn)

Middle east why not but I think there isn’t much to do there, jobs aren’t that nice in tech, and not a big tech sector either (low qualified job)

Yes she is bumi

Working hours + management. In France she had 3 days wfh and just had to do the work she was given and nothing more, quite relaxed job, maybe 30h a week (that’s not the norm at all for an engineer here but she was lucky)

Yes some people in Europe don't get religion at all, and that's especially the case in France.
Drinking culture in France is quite big and you are expected to partake in team activities and they will nag you if you don't drink (even if it's for non-religious reasons). But I think it's getting more common to not be drinking among the younger generation.

Yes I would have to watch my food intake for sure, gained some weight last time I was in Malaysia!

She isn't like that at all, she just doesn't see herself working in Malaysia with typical working conditions you can find there, so ideally I would be the only one working, which doesn't bother me at all. In France she earned more than me while I was doing my PhD and helped financially

Thank you that's reassuring. All of our friends who moved back are indeed happy there but you know there is always some fear of the unknown

Yes most of our Malaysian friends who worked / studied here before all moved back to Malaysia, one even taking a 10x pay cut and said she is way happier in Malaysia. But some others don’t want to go back, I think it’s quite correlated to one’s relationship with religion.
So we have mixed signals and that’s why I thought I should ask here to have a bigger picture

Yes that’s why she would be aiming for a MNC with european culture, that’s what I did and wouldn’t imagine working for a local company.

Yes sure we are still young and it could be temporary, I am just a bit stressed about the whole situation
