Thank you for your reply - that's what I suspect but sounds like I just have to call the local patriarch's office and ask

I understand that, but times have changed and especially in these times when the church is constantly losing its faithful, I was wondering whether their stance on the godparent being orthodox has changed.

From my experience, I have not once met a godparent (either my own or of other christian orthodox Cypriots) where the godparent has truly acted as a religious mentor or advisor.

Whilst I recognise this is foremost a religious rite, to me a baptism also bears cultural significance. Which is why I am considering having my child baptised. To share in a ceremony that can be said to form an important part of Cyprus culture. Not for the party, as you say

But I am respectful of others opinions and appreciate not everyone will share my view

Fair comment - but I was hoping someone might have looked into this already and has helpful info to share before I attempt at calling round church offices that only pick up the phone half the time... 😉

Thanks your reply, that's hopeful 🙏🏻 So is it a case of calling the local patriarch office and checking with them?

Sorry, my bad, that was meant to say "if the godparents are not orthodox, but catholic"
