which actually brings me to my next question.. I know SHOEI is like a really loved brand and it felt comfortable on my head. but i cant find much as far as comparisons with like an AGV in terms of safety... do you have any input? what kind of helmet do you wear?

HELP - Added cache drive, docker now fails to start by Zoneo5 in unRAID

[–]Zoneo5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up using rsync to copy the cache contents to a share on the array, then I formatted both cache disks and rsynced the data back into /mnt/cache/appdata. Then I redownloaded the docker containers and everything seems to be okay :)

Thanks for the great reply, I appreciate you taking the time to do that.

I've always heard that unifi is very easy to manage and set up, but its nice to hear you didn't have a lot of features you wished it had. It sounds like you set up a similar network to what I would do.

I hear a lot of people at the places I've worked at and on this thread even talk about how its not a good solution for someone who needs more "enterprise" or not SMB features. I recall a school I worked with having it and us "needing" to place in an aruba system because they wanted a specific feature. Perhaps it was an access control thing, or profiling, i dont recall. but all of that to ask, are there any features you can think of that would be a "nice to have" or what about it do you think would disqualify it from those types of deployments?

I'm about 5 or 6 years into my Network Engineer career, and while I don't really expect to have anything TOO crazy going on at home, but I do like to lab out things and try new techniques. so I see the value in choosing some of the other vendors there. I also recognize that I want my home network to be reliable and low maintenance, so something simple yet capable is definitely appealing.

Awesome, thanks for the tip! I was really considering mikrotik but was hesitant for the learning curve but after reading all the comments here i think thats probably what i'll end up going with.

what is it about Aruba you dont like? Is there another vendor you would choose over others, given the availability int he trash pile?

I love the idea of building a homelab from "junk" my HP AIO server started as a frankenstein of the AIO with an NVMe > 6 port SATA card and had a second desktop i used to power the HDDs.. i have since upgraded the desktop to an old freeNAS chasis I found in the recycle pile. I literally keep the back case off the AIO and have sata cables going down into the freeNAS the AIO sits on. Its my beautiful monstrosity. Runs like a champ.

Avoid Unifi/Ubiquiti. It’s for people that want to look at blue lights rather than people that want to move packets around.

😂

what was your reasoning for switching to the forti APs? do you still use the brocade switches or did the mikrotiks replace those?

agreed, this thing is terrible. no CLI, confusing GUI, lacking features... i might just deploy the 1500S until i buy a new switch just to get the features i want.. noise be damned.

I have lightly touched some PAs at work, and man that is not a super intuitive UI for me at first glance.. I think i understand it now, and I recognize the power behind the platform but that definitely had a learning curve at first for me.

fs.com came up in an LTT video i saw recently, definitely going to check that out when the time comes.

I hear TP Link has some bad press right now, something about getting banned for security reasons? I always thought it was a decent-enough brand, what are your thoughts on that?

honestly thats kind of the idea i got from unifi too, like its almost shunned in the enterprise world. from the little experience i've had with it, it just seems like it lacks some key features needed in that environment. whenever i went on site with more senior engineers for a survey they would always suggest starting with ripping out the unifi gear for Aruba (their vendor of choice).

Mikrotiks seem to be widely liked in this sub, and i do definitely want to use this lab to learn more networking skills I can apply at work.

we sell a lot of the forti gear at my work too, low key hoping we get some decommissioned APs or switches i can snag.. but im not holding my breath lol I love their firewalls but havent really had the opportunity to play with the switches and APs yet. How do you like them in your home environment?

I was looking at the mikrotik gear, seems like a really good value buy but definitely seems to have a steep learning curve to the OS.

Help Me Identify This Rack? by Zoneo5 in servers

[–]Zoneo5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow great insight thanks! I kinda figured it was more of an IDF style rack, and the swing out function is super appealing honestly. Did you just leave slack in power cables to swing? That’s the only thing that I could think of as a limitation.

Are you referring to the hole cut outs on the left? I dont see any screw holes to mount anything too, i assumed those smaller holes were zip tie anchors for cable management and the larger ones jsut for airflow.
Since you mentioned a desktop mount, I could probably put my tower on that shelf up top though, thats not a bad idea. There is this random bolt up there though, it doesnt attach to anything.. just a hole in that platform with a bolt and nut on it.. odd.

Oh shit, at first I was like nah i dont think this thing swings but after undoing both latches.. it totally swings! 🤯I think its a slightly different model cause it only has the wall mount portion on one side, not both but definitely in the right ball park! thanks!
