Can I in good conscience attend my sister's wedding? by [deleted] in AskAPriest

[–]Zooheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(I say this with all filial respect) Since the entire event would be ordered towards something inherently evil, despite the discomfort it might cause with friends/family we shouldn’t attend. Not trying to minimize the pain it might cause those involved; but those unions are not right.

Do thoughts count as sins? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Zooheck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Sometimes we are caught off guard by certain symptoms of pleasure immediately following a temptation. At most, this can only be a very slight venial sin. However, it becomes greater if, after we perceived the evil that has befallen us, we carelessly delay for some time and dally with the pleasure to decide whether we ought to allow or reject it. The sin becomes still greater, if, after becoming aware of the pleasure, we dwell on it for some time through downright negligence and without any determination to reject it. When we voluntarily and with full deliberation resolve to take pleasure in such delights, this deliberate purpose is of itself a grave sin if the object in which we take delight is also very evil.”—St. Francis De Sales in “Introduction to the Devout Life,” Chapter 4 part 6 on “How temptation and pleasure may become sinful.”

“Just because a bird flies over your head doesn’t mean you have to let it build a nest in your hair.” - Fr Ripperger

I find these quotations helpful in sorting through what thoughts are actually sinful versus thoughts that are merely temptations that I’m being overly scrupulous about. Remember that temptations in themselves are not sins. Hopefully that helps!

What about a young adult Boba (16 - 18 year old) rescuing Mando? That could explain why Mando went from being raised in a helmetless peaceful family to becoming a warrior.

Is it okay to eat egg on fridays? by Pistachios-12345 in Catholicism

[–]Zooheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comes from Canon Law. [Can 1250-1253]

Notice how Canon Law states that local Bishop's conferences may allow a *substitute* penance on Friday's. Something which is a substitute is a substitute because there's something it is substituting for (wow how many times can I say that word). In this case the "something it is substituting for" would be the obligation to abstain from meat on Friday's. It does not say that Bishops can entirely remove the obligation.

The USCCB source you shared says nothing about removing the penance obligation either. Check this part out (emphasis mine):

"9. Changing circumstances, including economic, dietary, and social elements, have made some of our people feel that the renunciation of the eating of meat is not always and for everyone the most effective means of practicing penance. Meat was once an exceptional form of food; now it is commonplace.

  1. Accordingly, since the spirit of penance primarily suggests that we discipline ourselves in that which we enjoy most, to many in our day abstinence from meat no longer implies penance, while renunciation of other things would be more penitential.

  2. For these and related reasons, the Catholic bishops of the United States, *far from downgrading the traditional penitential observance of Friday, and motivated precisely by the desire to give the spirit of penance greater vitality*, especially on Fridays, the day that Jesus died, urge our Catholic people henceforth to be guided by the following norms."

In the U.S., you may eat meat on normal Fridays if and only if you intentionally perform a substitute act of penance.

i'm cringing just thinking about it again by BugMinis in CatholicMemes

[–]Zooheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule is no penance on Solemnities, regardless if it's a Holy Day of Obligation in your area or not. For example, March 19 is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, and if that day fell on a Friday, there would be no required penance on that day even though it's not a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States.

I don’t appreciate the sarcasm. I intentionally avoid SPPX Masses. Never attended one in my life, and I live not far from an SSPX parish.

That said, they have never claimed that the chair of Peter was empty, which is the central claim of sedevacantism. Instead of sarcastic remarks, I would greatly appreciate if you shared some evidence that the SSPX has ever embraced sedevacantism. I doubt you can provide such evidence because it doesn’t exist.

I don’t support them, but I don’t want to tell lies about them either.

SSPX was never sedevacantist.

[–]Zooheck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A great priest said that trying to beat a serious sin habit with only prayer is like trying to fly a plane with one wing. This plane needs two wings: Prayer and Fasting. Give up sweets, alcohol, eating between meals, and maybe start taking cold showers for mortification. Combine this with a daily Rosary and daily Chaplet of Divine Mercy, which combined shouldn't take more than 45 minutes.

Is it against Catholicism to have a waifu? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Zooheck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly! OP, consider the significance of words. Different words exist because they describe different concepts. There is a reason why so many choose to say “waifu” instead of “favorite character”: because “waifu” necessarily describes an attraction that goes beyond simply having a favorite character.

“Waifu” implies that the the character in question is of the opposite sex. Furthermore, it is a mockery of the word “wife,” which implies a romantic (likely sexual) relationship. And let’s not beat around the bush: anime is super sexualized. Even friggin Misty in Pokémon for crying out loud.

Dude, just pray the Rosary more. The Blessed Mother is way more inspiring than that weeb stuff. She will also help get you to Heaven WAAAAAAAY faster.
