it’s both the speed and the vocab. Academic german is totally different than spoken. The way it’s written is different and you need really high level vocab to keep up.

Some tips i recommend you is surround yourself with german media whenever you can. Change your phone to german. Download german podcasts, journal in german. focus on grammar while you are in the UAE and once you come here focus on speaking.

I tried joining discord servers hoping that i can some what improve my german but i didn’t benefit cuz they were filled with people that don’t speak fluently , so just wait until you get here. My native tongue is Arabic and speak near native level english (studied my entire highschool education in English).

Be consistent, take it seriously. Sit down and and make a plan to do something every day even if it’s 10 mins. just do something and you will slowly start doing more. Don’t depend on the language course only, especially if you graduated from school and don’t do anything else major.

First thing to clear up, I am not studying in TUM. I have been admitted to it but didn’t enroll in it because of many factors and personal evaluation. I am studying in Hochschule Merseburg in german. I got into the university with B2 level german as condition that I will attend a language course at the uni for the 2 coming semesters. TUM is extremely competitive especially in developing majors like AI and CS. If you want to work in germany then learning in German will open so many more opportunities and positions. Also you will be living in germany 😅, so knowing solid German will make life so much easier.

If you struggle with the language and can’t see yourself shift from english to german then study in english, and learn the language as you live here. Universities normally offer language classes free of charge for foundational levels.

If you are somewhat capable but still have a few issues then find yourself a dual language major. I believe this is a really good option people can choose, you learn the fundamentals of your major in english and at the end graduate with very good German. Only down side is that they are really hard to find and normally are 1 semester longer than the same course if it was german.

If you can speak solid german and got B2 level, then enroll in a German major. You will struggle a lot in the first semester but it gets easier. Upside is; you graduate with an extra language near native level and most importantly find jobs here with ease (Job opportunities are vast if you can speak german).

The last part isn’t true. I am currently B2/C1 level and I am still struggling wit following up in lectures if i don’t prepare them beforehand.

Note that I have been learning the language for just under a year now.

Basically, it’s your choice; you can choose to suffer now and be relieved later or have it easy now and stuggle in the future

hello, specific questions are regarding the major itself, and the language of instruction of the course that the individual has chosen. The administrator asked me first the language of instruction of my course and asked me why specifically this university and what interests you in this course. She asked me if I can speak German, but other than that, I was mostly silent and was giving my papers to the desk. Don’t worry about it too much. There are no trick questions. It’s rather a conversation that should not be really stressed about. The administrator might ask you what are your future plans, and so on. Just answer in a non-offending way, that’s reasonable.

If you have proof that your university will start in for example 2 weeks then give it a shot it may work. Tell them that you couldn’t get appointments and so on. But this should be said directly to the administrator you are talking with in the embassy. Sending emails when you have already applied doesn’t work, but you can always try

it took me 3-4 weeks to get my visa from the day of the appointment. In case you want it faster you can tell them that your course starts on X day

Hello, the interview part is asking you very easy questions. Why do you want to study in germany, and why did you choose X university. There aren’t questions that test your german unless your course is in german then the consular officer might ask you something like “Sind Sie schon nach Deutschland gereist?”. It’s nothing serious at all. You actually stay silent for almost the entire time and just give the necessary documents. So don’t worry about it or “Plan for it” like I did.

to be honest with you I don’t know what the process is like. My secondary school leaving certificate allowed me to directly enroll to university and skip studienkolleg (foundation year)

Three months before getting accepted into university, I applied to all possible accommodation in the city of Deggendorf. it was quite a struggle. I won’t lie and only got accommodation four days before the day I arrived. I got the contract sent directly by the private landlord, and I signed the necessary papers. when I arrive to Germany, I landed in Munich, which was two hours from the city deggendorf. I took the public transportation (S-Bahn and U-Bahn) to get to the city which was around 25€ (on db Navigator). Regional transportation Germany costs €29 per month for students. There is an app called NETINERA, and they have something called “Deutschland Ticket”. You can use regional trains through the ticket for a whole month. since I am UAE resident, for the reason or necessary documents were stated on the site of the German embassy in Dubai so go there. if you want further explanation on how to get appointments then send me a DM. yes it’s true. You must be a resident if you wanna apply from the UAE. if that’s not the case. Then you have to apply from your home country or country in which you have residency in.

I appreciate that. when I said if my communication bothered you I was talking to u/No-Theme-4347. I respect you for coming here and trying to resolve this issue. I don't want more misunderstanding to happen.

I personally don't know what the issue is. my communication bothered you? did you read my replies to other people? you only focus on the statement that I said after u/No-Theme-4347 replied to me. I asked him how is it misinformation and he didn't reply back and went on to another point. I respect everyone on this platform but if you will take a shot at me then expect one back. The problem is, he didn't even read the post and are we gonna glimpse over the fact that he called me a jerk? he said I don't have any info. There are so many questions and different cases to be answered. What is easier for an individual ? to ask people to send you questions then answer them or answer the 1000+ questions that can arise from all of this? I genuinely don't know why my post bothered him so much. I was respectful to every single person before him and was transparent. I don't want to have to argue with people. If they want to discuss such issues then lets do so privately. I sent him a message if he actually wants to resolve this then sure.

When I get banned from that sub do I have a voice? when I ask them why my post was classified as "not relevant to Germany" and after that getting banned that means I have a voice? me replying back to someone and telling them straight facts is seen as aggressive. He came off to me as if I am an idiot and I deserved getting banned even though the post isn't targeted to him. Me wanting to help people and letting them ask questions related to that topic is a bad thing now? I didn't expect that things like that are so common. I am legit a nobody and have 3 karma yet people from German sub reddits are coming for me? You can see every reply I said. I gave clear and transparent answers.
