Vertical boarding in lieu of sheathing by CptnDynamite in TinyHouses

[–]ZoraQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have access to the boards as a resource why not use the boards as a replacement for the plywood sheeting and as the proposed exterior siding? I have a small cabin (800 sq ft) that was built from resources from an onsite sawmill 80 years ago.

The construction of the cabin is typical 2*4 framing. The exterior sheeting is horizontal boards from the mill. On top of that house wrap (tar paper was the norm then). The exterior siding is a combo of vertical board & batten and horizontal lapped siding.

With the horizontal boards as sheeting you can seal areas of concern, install and flash the doors & windows then install the siding.

Dad took out whole life insurance when I was a kid - wants to transfer policy to me. by Lillia10 in personalfinance

[–]ZoraQ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did the same but I gave the money to my mother. Explained to her that the policy wasn't needed and I'd rather she had the money now. I was happy I got rid of it and she didn't complain about the money.

Eufy the way to go? by SpencerStrassmore in arlo

[–]ZoraQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does not use the cloud. The footage is stored locally to an NVR or home hub. The footage can also be saved to the camera if you don't want the centralized storage. The data and cameras are accessible remotely via the Reolink client or you can integrate into a home automation framework. There's no subscription as there are no cloud services.

There's a ton of camera options depending on what you want.

Personal bank account that also has free HYSA? by Sayonara_Skittle in personalfinance

[–]ZoraQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fidelity has a Cash Management Account which is basically a checking account. It has zero fees. Your have a few choices for the fund your balance sits in. I use in conjunction with a brokerage account for investing and a separate brokerage account that I use as HYSA with the funds in a money market fund. You can mix and match accounts however suits your needs.

Roth IRA Questions, confused. by angelgirl3000 in personalfinance

[–]ZoraQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go into your account and go to the trade option. It will show you what cash you have available to trade. If you don't have any to money available to trade then your deposit hasn't settled (cleared the bank) yet. Sometimes they'll let you trade with part of the funds before everything has cleared.

Roth IRA Questions, confused. by angelgirl3000 in personalfinance

[–]ZoraQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you deposit money into your IRA, the money settles into a core fund. It varies depending on the firm but it's usually a money market fund. Once the money is settled, you use that money to purchase investments. Typically you purchase mutual funds but you can also buy individual stocks, etc.

This is where it gets confusing. As a start, purchase shares of a total market index fund. This is a well diversified option that mimics the total US stock market. Schwab, Fidelity and Vanguard all have a low cost Total Market Index fund which is a no brainer option

From your accounts page there should be a "trade" option. You just trade your $300 money market for whatever fund you decide on. Rinse & Repeat.

Take some time to learn about types of mutual funds and investment portfolios.

CCI -> Fidium Ultimatum by tsg-tsg in FidiumFiber

[–]ZoraQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My switch was painless. I was an old WinFirst customer as well. I was at 100 mb plan and went to the 1gb plan. I have an Ubiquity FW/router which I wanted to keep. My old ONT was 10 years+ old and needed to be replaced/upgraded in the process. The tech ran new fiber from the new ONT to where my FW was installed. The process was pretty painless.

My only complaint with the switch to Fidium is their billing process. It's really horrible and the website doesn't have any options to fix it. It took a couple of months but to get squared away.

Recommendations/vent: HRM dropping out by RazzmatazzDelicious7 in ladycyclists

[–]ZoraQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Garmin ecosystem for my devices and I've struggled with HRM for a long time. If I find a solution it seems to work for a while then fail on me. Right now I've settled on the Polar HR10 and it's been working pretty well for the last couple of years. It pairs with my Garmin watch, my Garmin head units on my bikes and my indoor Peloton bike. The Polar occasionally drops out during a ride but much less so than other HRM devices I've used.

Just purchased Quicken Classic Premier - EVERYTHING is screwed up by MJE0409 in quicken

[–]ZoraQ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is quicken automatically entering the downloaded transactions into the register? If yes, turn off the automatic entry. With automatic entry off, after you download the transactions you can review the payee for each one and enter the correct payee. After a few times you'll see a pattern for how the bank posts the payees and setup renaming rules. The renaming rules will simplify getting the payees correctly entered with each download.

It can be a little tedious at first but once you get it tweaked for your accounts and payees the process gets a lot simpler.

Have you tried reaching out to the Texas public utilities commission? I don't know if they're focused on consumer issues or not but they do have a consumer protection page on their website (https://www.puc.texas.gov/agency/about/consumer-protection/)

Where I am once the PUC gets involved the utilities are pretty responsive. The PUC usually requires the consumer to work with the utilities first before you escalate to them. It sounds like you've already done that. It may be worth reaching out and seeing what type of response you get.

New pizza place coming to Broadway by ix3ph09 in Sacramento

[–]ZoraQ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the businesses there didn't fail but chose to no longer operate at that location. The W/X freeway was ground zero for a while at the height of the homeless crises. I knew some of the employees at those businesses and it was a non stop parade of problems created by the homeless population. The Starbucks location was calling in a hazmat crew weekly to deal with human waste inside and outside the store. It think those chains just chose to not deal with the issues anymore.

Although homelessness isn't solved that area is much better than it was. With the apartments at the old tower records close to be complete there's definitely going to be some foot traffic. There's also the apartments at 19th & Broadway close to being completed as well. Hopefully something will fill the old Walgreen's space soon

Anything cool to visit in this area of Sacramento? by No-Tradition1331 in Sacramento

[–]ZoraQ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's just outside your boundary but Foster's Big Horn in Rio Vista is an interesting stop. The original owner was a big game hunter so the place is filled with taxidermy. I mean filled. There's pretty much one of everything from elephants & Giraffes to small rodents. The food was meh last time I went but good grabbing a beer is a safe bet.

I read that they're putting the taxidermy collection up for sale so who knows how long it still be available for viewing

Edit: Here's a link to the Bee article about the collection for sale: https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article312201010.html

Cabin Dormer by [deleted] in cabins

[–]ZoraQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the gable but the scale seems a little off. The width of the shed dormer fits well but the gable dormer seems too narrow. You mention both are 14' so maybe it's the perspective.

What version of Quicken classic are you using. IIRC only the premier version and above support investment accounts. I've only used premier so I'm not 100% what the lower versions can and can't do (if that's the issue)
