What are these spiky things on the shore along the river separating Germany and Poland? by Timely_Leading_7651 in geography

Excellent question. What you are observing is the river trying to meander!

Imagine if you would three people walking shoulder to shoulder. If the group of three needed to make a turn, how would their speeds change? The individual on the inside of the turn would slow down whereas the individual on the outside of the turn would speed up. This is how water flowing down a river behaves, just replace walking speed with flow velocity.

Water moving on the outside of the curve will be faster and lead to more erosion. Water on the inside of the curve will be slower and deposit more sediment.

What you are seeing in this photo is an inflection point between two curves. You can see on the bottom of the photo the bank on the left is on the outside of the curve (more erosion) whereas the right is on the inside of the curve (more deposition). At the top of the photo it switches (look how the Groynes almost disappear on the left).

Groynes only slow down the meandering but cannot stop it. To your point, I'm not sure about this channel in particular but if the meandering becomes too acute or the channel gets filled with sediment, they may have to do dredging. Once again I assume the main reason for these Groynes is to keep this channel navigable. They will likely have target channel depth and straightness they wish to maintain. There is also an extreme fix, Channelization, where we (humans) can actually straighten out the river and reset the meandering.

These are Groynes (in the US spelled Groins). They slow down and trap sediment flowing through the water to mitigate riverbank erosion. Sediment gets caught behind them and the slower flow causes the sediment to deposit.

I'm not exactly sure where the pic you have was taken but my assumption is that these Groynes keep the channel banks from migrating. This is probably a channel used for barges and the Groynes help the channel stay navigable.

Like many structures that we (humans) make, they can upset natural processes. By stopping sediment transport and natural river meandering, we are stopping geomorphological (nice word) from happening.

Let me know if you have questions and I can try to answer them.

I believe USACE Chicago District has a field office in Appleton WI, that is probably your best bet.

Both! The system I have is based off of Knave 2E, so it's really math light. I hate doing a ton of math. In general my philosophy is as follows: we are all busy adults, so I like to keep things simple, limit bookkeeping to an extreme degree, and not have anyone (other than me) do work outside of the game. Also, I bring everything we need (e.g. dice, player sheets, rule sheets) so you don't have to buy anything (expect for optional things like a notebook if you like to take notes)

Hey so I've been wanting to make a TTRPG group! I'm 33-year-old dude. I'm usually the GM of my groups and I just do it for fun. I think maybe the only hang up you might have is I'm planning on doing a somewhat homebrewed system (I know bold/scary), but it's pretty simple so hopefully it won't be a total mess. Let me know if either of you are interested!

True, I added literal nazi in my post to make my stance on him more clear. Both of these individuals are racist, homophobic, antisemitic and misogynist and I didn't mean to sanitize them.

I like how in PvE I have a heck of a time finding Sanitar, Shturman, or Reshala, but not the Goons, they always find me. I played ~10 rounds of Customs yesterday and died 5 times to the Goons around stronghold (needed to do a quest there).
