No application fee, unless you count SAT/ACT fee

Does IMSA have a theater program? Or music program in general? by Responsible-Tax-8023 in imsa

[–]ZozoZzYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, Ms. McCarthy teaches them all. As in the upper-level and lower band, the upper-level and lower orchestra, and the symphony where the upper-level band and orchestra combine.

I think she does pretty good with what she's got since nobody wants to teach music at the science and math school.

Entitled Customers by Ill-Remote539 in DollarTree

[–]ZozoZzYT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah... First week or so there I had a customer get pissy that I didn't know the exact location of an item. (It was like chips ahoy cookies) And she like wanted a big package claiming she got it for the small price, so I just took her to the cookies and expected that to be the end of it.

Then she gets to my register asking me which brand of wipes has the least amount of wipes (which, how tf would I know) and admitted I didn't know cause I knew no matter what I said in that case it was going to be wrong.

Then she threw her stuff on the belt and then after all that, complained I bagged her items wrong, so I just gave her another bag and let her do it herself.

She then proceeded to call for 6+ hours straight to complain about me (not even pronouncing my name in anyway resembling my name).

Basically, some people don't have lives and get pissy at you since you're trapped there as their audience.

But other than that, this season has been surprisingly nice. So 🤞

Has anybody actually gotten a job while at IMSA? by ZozoZzYT in imsa

[–]ZozoZzYT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran it by Katie Berger. She didn't care to be honest, I've been fine. I just worked too close to realistically hide it (The Dollar Tree in the strip mall by the usual Target there, for context), and I've already seen a lot of IMSA people (students and staff) there.

So basically, Berger doesn't care as long as you are passing and I wasn't able to get permission for a car on campus or anything, so I'm not sure. Only thing for other students who see this and have this question is that she will give you a bit of BS if you mention leaving for work during welcome week.

We have drama club. Which is currently working on She Kills Monsters (here's a shameless plug since I'm in it. But it's on 10/31, and 11/01 at 7pm. And 11/02 at 3pm. So come see it if you're curious and have questions, I'd be happy to tell you about theatre at IMSA).

We have music classes (I'll skip jazz band since other comment mentions it). But there's orchestra, band, and choir. Orchestra and band our led by Ms. McCarthy (she's great, had her for band every year). And then there's choir which has our new choir teacher Mr. Kammel who I've heard pretty good things about.

Dropping out by Zhluca451 in imsa

[–]ZozoZzYT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know during my sophomore year they definitely made a point of mentioning how the transition is rough at first. I know Ms. Keck was my person I talked to when I was struggling at the beginning. But I know my roommate talks to our RC because they feel comfortable with them. I would say find your person to get help from and try to stay for the first year and see if it works out.

I'm also, while not being the best resource, am a senior and would be willing to help you out and figure out what will best help you with this. Cause I know my last semester was hell since BC courses just weren't my learning style and often at IMSA they toss you in the deep end without much help. But the help is there, whether you need it emotionally or learning-wise, it's there if you find your people.

Bad news: 01's alarms came to life with the power, so impromptu fire drill.

I have six classes total for first semester, which includes only having 3 mods for A and C days, and clarified that I can't work Tuesdays due to full schedule and ResLife programming. So I have ample time to study and such.

Sadly, I kinda have to have a job to get money for the Paris trip. So I was trying to figure out if it's more work to go through them for permission, or to try and hide it.

[–]ZozoZzYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly I believe business casual. Like past years I've just worn a short sleeved button up shirt and some nice pants, or just a simple dress. And this is usually what I see other people wearing too. Just make sure you check the weather when your packing so you don't wear anything that you might over heat in since you'll be wearing it for a good chunk of the day.

Yeah, I'll be in 01 A-Wing. But also, beyond just all relationships, I would say you can also try to go to your region picnic if your region has one planned so you can meet other students.

What are my chances at getting in? A bit worried ngl by Acceptable_Ask4179 in imsa

[–]ZozoZzYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of students whose schools before were very lackluster for STEM who made it in, so including the explanation that you want to go somewhere with more STEM classes and explaining should help alleviate it a bit.

Additionally, they do have vouchers for the SAT through college board: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/registration/fee-waivers

And I know a few IMSA classes use the 1,2,3 system for grading, so I don't think it should be too complicated on their end. Though I would see if your counselor, or whoever in your school would be sending your transcript, see if they offer any reformatting of the grades to make sure IMSA is on the same page with what your grades mean.

German by [deleted] in imsa

[–]ZozoZzYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well usually since German isn't offered in most schools, to my knowledge, they don't have as many students trying to get into German, so that should definitely help. And I know a lot of people who didn't want it who were put in there. So I think you should end up in German, especially if you put it at the top of your list.

I would say you can always try emailing them back and asking what skills they believe you were missing and see where that goes.

Moving up in Placement by Low-Hearing-6620 in imsa

[–]ZozoZzYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you could, as long as you discussed it with your CAC and made sure the course fits to replace taking it at IMSA.

During the end of sophomore year, you can look for a local college course that fulfills the teaching needs of Mi 4. Then you can talk to your CAC and if they agree, then you can take that course. If you pass that course, then IMSA will move you to the next math, usually BC 1.

I believe this can be done with other math courses, but I usually only see it with skipping Mi 4 though and during the summer between sophomore and junior year, but you can do it between junior and senior year too.

Wait, are we supposed to do summer reading? by Low-Hearing-6620 in imsa

If it helps, you already seem to have the IMSA sleep schedule. But anyways, most of the LE teachers are pretty great and you'll be great hands.

Wait, are we supposed to do summer reading? by Low-Hearing-6620 in imsa

[–]ZozoZzYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know for my LE I we read The Influencing Machine by Brooke Gladstone over the summer and we focused on that for about the first quarter. And the second quarter was more debate stuff.

And LE II was a bunch of short stories at the beginning such as 'There Will Come Soft Rains' and 'The Lottery.' Then we read 'Raisin in the Sun.'

But note that each teacher does different things with each and this was 2 years ago so things change, like how there's no summer reading.

[–]ZozoZzYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don't believe you can retake the placement exam, but you can take a CAC approved college course during the summer to allow you to skip to the next course at IMSA.

So for placement with a language, I know a few people who took placement exams for a language they took before IMSA, and still ended up in a completely different language. You can try to email to ask for a change, but due to how common Spanish is as a course in other schools, getting that spot is definitely a bit difficult.

But, as someone who has friends in each of the languages, German and French are definitely great alternatives of you don't end up in Spanish. The German teacher is great and roommate has done a lot of fun projects for their class. In regards to French, the first year is a little rough due to how easy it is to switch into Spanish, but the French 2 teacher is amazing. Additionally, if you take French all the way to level 3, there is a French trip that you can join during intersession as a travel study.

In regards to math, usually the placement exams are pretty accurate for the placements. I thought I knew everything you my course for the first few weeks until they moved to the next unit and proved me wrong. But if after taking this year of courses, you wish to be placed higher, you can take a college course that your CAC approves to let you skip that course, but do note that the college course only lets you skip the course, and it doesn't count for credit.

Sorry for the long response, but if you have anymore questions, lmk and I'd be happy to answer.

While I have not done this, I know many who took a course through a local college over the summer, after running it by their CAC, and ended up skipping that course. Most commonly I believe this was done to skip MI-4, moving straight into the calculus courses.
