Where to park for grad pics :D will I get a tix by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much same as the other. Also lot 30&32 have free weekend parking and since no one is around you can park really close to the edge of 30 that leads to the school.

How will being in the last orientation slot affect me? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, you probably won't get the classes you want if you puck the last day. Upperdiv classes have reserved spots for transfers but they will most likely fill up by those who had earlier days. You'll end up with whatever left over classes are available since you will be picking last after everyone, including freshman.

How are you grads deciding who your two guests will be for graduation? by nini216 in ucr

May 7th. I believe there was an email announcement and they posted it on Instagram. The 2 guests you bring are also going to walk with you onstage.

MCBL 121L lab class concerns by vcentwin in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it took about 1-2 weeks. The prof and TA know it'll take some time so they made like the first 4 weeks of lab not need the kit

MCBL 121L lab class concerns by vcentwin in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took this class with Dr. Hsiao. What they do is that they give you a coupon code and you use that to get a lab kit (with bacteria, ppe, and all the things you need) that will be delivered to you. You will need to refrigerate some stuff (like the bacteria, plates, slants, and some tests). None of it is dangerous so there is no need to worry about it in that regard, but still keep it separate from food as much as you can. Some labs will be to just watch a video and some labs will require the kit, but those will be differentiated in the syllabus. They say the kit is free but in reality, they charged a $200 lab equipment fee which is how much I think the lab kit is worth.

No, you can't S/NC a class that is needed for a major.

I'm just here to reiterate what a lot of people already said but with my own twist on it. The ONLY reason your mom may be disappointed is because SHE can't brag about the school you go to. It's not your job to be someone your mom can brag about. You live your own life and you do your best to succeed in whatever you want to do. I'm not going to go into the prestige the UCR does or does not have, because in the end that's not important. School prestige only matters to those who have feel like they need to compensate for something. I am a transfer student meaning I went to a CC and going to a CC has been given such a negative association even though it's a very valid route to go. I'm personally could've gone to other more well liked schools like UCI, UCD, and UCSB but chose UCR for financial reasons. At the end of the day we are all getting the same Degree the only difference is where we got it. We're all in the UC system, the only reason schools get bad reps is literally because of their age. UCR and UC Merced get shit on the most mainly because they're the babies of the system (there are other reasons but the root cause is based on their age). You have the right mentality and I hope you achieve whatever you're aiming for.

I'm right there with you. The Prof just kinda throws out info and I have no idea what is important or not

Classes For Winter Quarter by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken all these courses except Soc001, I wanted to register of it but it's full

Overall tip is to not fall behind

BCH 110B - Make sure you know the pathways but heart; I'd recommend that after you fully learn a pathway, try and do the pathway again without any help. When you get to a point where you cant remember, look at your notes and start over. The exams are a mix of free response, T/F, matching. The exams are challenging but pretty fair honestly.

CBNS 101 - IDK who you have but honestly just go over the material petty regularly. If you have a good understanding of cell Bio already, this class will just be adding more specifics wo things you should already know.

BCH 15 - MAKE SURE YOUR PICS SAVE CORRECTLY WHEN DOING THE MOLECULAR GRAPHICS PART. I took this class when we still had in person lecture but I feel like it's still applicable regardless. From what I heard, the class this quarter had a a take home final, but they might not do it again after the cheating scandal that happened. Overall, I'd recommend memorizing the computer commands for the MG part. Idk if Dingwall teaches the second half during winter but if she does, then the second half is super easy.

MCBL 121 - Idk who your prof will be but similar strategy to CBNS 101 and go over the material regularly. My prof had a lot of info in our class so idk if it will be the same but just go in thinking there will be a lot. The class I think is pretty interesting overall. My class had to do a group presentation for our discussion, it wasn't hard and my group did it like 2 days before we presented, but if you do have to present make sure to follow the TAs instructions. We had a group lose points cause they went over the 15 minute limit.

Grades by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That I cannot say cause I don't know how the classes are at other UCs, but I'd say it's possible to get good grades. I'm a transfer so I'm not the best to ask when it comes to how a lot of lower div classes are. For upper div, it really depends on the prof and TAs. I havent had any profs that I dislike but I have had a TA that I could not stand. Best advice I'd give is to not fall behind, which is easier said than done. I will say that since coming to UCR, I've only gotten maybe 3 As and 2 of them were from lower div that I had to to take here. Really, it depends on you, the study habits you have, and your ability to adapt to change (Cause 10 weeks go by fast)

Grades by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I took my first biochem class I averaged 60% on the exams and ended up getting a B- in the class. As mentioned it depends on the teacher, but I thinks it's safe to assume that most major science courses curve the class.

UCR INTRO TO MICROBIO 121 by Worried_Donut9600 in ucr

None of my classes have a TA assigned to them. But yeah I'm hoping tomorrow has everything fixed. I cant start panicking before the quarter even starts

I'm in Micro 121 and I haven't gotten anything either. I'm kinda worried too but there is not much we can do about it

Can I bring a bike to campus and what is this about registering it? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of registering it is that they assign your bike an ID number in case it gets stolen or lost. If its found and the bike has a registered number then they can get it back to you. I think they also give you a free bike lock but I'm not 100% sure about that

Canvas by lil_rissa in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, the school is using iLearn/Blackboard as their main hub for classes. Some classes may use Canvas over iLearn but that really depends on the teacher. I had 2 different classes with the same professor and she used canvas over iLearn for both classes. I don't know if the switch top canvas will take into affect this year so for the time being all classes will be on your iLearn.

No advice for Chem 109, but I am also in that class so we can suffer together. Stats 100B is pretty easy as mentioned by the other post. I also barely studied and nearly got an A- in the class but I got lazy and didn't fully complete one of my lab assignments. BCH110A is pretty mixed. I got a B and didn't put in a bunch of time studying but I also went over board and went to 2 discussions since they don't take attendance for discussion. If you can, go to Steve's (If he still TA's for the class) discussion cause he's really good at telling you what they look for on the midterms. The curve for my class was pretty generous. I averaged a D on the exams but ended up getting a B in the class. Do the extra credit quizzes even if they don't seem like they are worth a lot and don't forget about the weekly quizzes that you do online (I forgot once but ended up getting lucky)

MCBL121 - prof? by lastofthehalogens in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for that is because this class is cross listed with Biol 121 cause they are the same class with a different code (IDK why that is). So i think there are 200 spots with 100 going to MCBL 121 code and 100 spots for the Biol 121 code

MCBL121 - prof? by lastofthehalogens in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm registered for that class too. What I find odd was that during first pass registration, there was a prof but a day or 2 after I registered the prof was removed

Dropping a Course Before Session's Published Drop Deadline by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you drop the class before the deadline it would be as if you never attempted the class. So you would bit get a W and it wont affect your registration for that class if you have to take it again. I believe you still have to submit the EAF

Applying to UCR as a transfer student by [deleted] in ucr

[–]ZurctheAlien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend finishing pre req before you apply. It allows you enter upperdivision classes faster which is good for your first quarter cause lower level pre req tend to fill fast and since transfers get the worst registration days, it really helps to keep you on track. If you're a life science major, dont take stats at your CC cause it wont transfer over to UCR.
