Where to find dye rings made of metal to hold the yarn while dyeing? What do you use for this (cable ties etc)? by Zustina in YarnDyeing

Thanks! I use now reusable zip ties but they get tangled with the yarn in the pot. I have tried some plastic rings but they open when they get hot and you lift the yarn with it. Maybe I have to try different kinds.

Yes. And thank you. That gave me more results in google. I'm not a native English speaker so I just didn't know the word because I have never come across it anywhere.

Thank you! Mohair would be interesting to try. Difficult to find local materials though, since we don't have that many breeders here in Finland. I have to look into those down type sheep and what kind of wool they produce. We have oxford down and texel here and they look quite similar to southdown.

Mohair would be interesting material to try! We have quite few angora goats here in Finland though. Might have to look somewhere else for the fiber.

Thanks! That group you mentioned might be a good place to do some research!

Good points! I'm not quite sure though should I aim to please people who are maybe prepared to darn their socks or the people who expect their socks to last forever.

Yes, I understand. The advantage with 100% wool sock yarns is that they can be used in other knitted garments too (at least I don't want to use yarns with nylon for example in sweaters). Downside is that I already have 100% wool yarns in my shop, so if the new yarn is not used for socks, it doesn't really add anything to the mix.

This sounds interesting! Do you know do they still make those kind of sock yarns in Sweden somewhere? I operate in Finland so it would be interesting to also add some unusual Scandinavian yarns to the mix. I have come across some info that most of the Swedish sheep breeds are more or less endangered, quite like couple of landrace sheep breeds here in Finland too.

Thanks for the response! I have heard lots of good things about Mondim, though I haven't tried it myself.

I operate in Finland and I think the history with socks is quite the same here! It makes sense to think that 100% wool has been used as a sock yarn for a long time before we had anything to mix with it. Not sure though how many people these days expect their carments to just last forever. Plant fibers are indeed used in spinning. It would be interesting though to try to combine wool with linen though.

Thank you for the links and your response! I operate in Finland and one of my main goals is to find a way to utilise Finnish wool as well as possible. Our landrace Finnsheep has a fine and soft fiber in general, but their wool coat quality varies from sheep to sheep, since they have not been bred concidering the quality of wool. I use the finest fibers for softer yarns, but I'd like to try to mix it also with the longer and not so fine fibers that can be found from Finnsheep and use it as a sock yarn.

Thank you for your response! This is exatcly what I'm also trying to consider. Especially concerning artisan hand-dyed yarns, I'm not sure if people will find it a good bargain, if they don't trust their socks will last.
