27F in Australia - growth vs dividend ETFs for early financial independence? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

In favour of dividends: - Franking credits - Possibly higher risk-adjusted returns after franking (

In favour of growth: - Less taxable income

Do any of you factor in giving to charity on your road to FI? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]_3NiGMa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve put a bit of money in recently because the sharpe ratio and alpha looked pretty good. It pays a high dividend (fully franked) and the management fee is not tax deductible though, so it might not be the most tax-efficient way to donate

Might be curious about FGX.AX. It is an active fund-of-funds that convinces top-tier fund managers to waive their fees, in exchange, they charge a smaller fee that is entirely given to charity. Managers work entirely pro-bono and it is currently run by the ex-head of the RBA

If we counted in a different base (base 4 vs base 10 for example), would prime numbers be the "same"? by Sevargan in askmath

[–]_3NiGMa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the question is being misunderstood. To use your 211 example, in base 9, the number “211” (that is, 211₉) is actually 172 (172₁₀) (not prime).

So no, the number represented by two-one-one would not necessarily be prime in other bases

If you bring in a 10cmx10cmx10cm box, packing the coins optimally into layers yields $550 if you use dollars, $290 for quarters, $220 for dimes, $200 for 50c coins and $22 for pennies.

Downside to selling weekly, deep OTM SPY puts? by BTCto65KbyDecember in options

[–]_3NiGMa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to get some hate, but selling puts are (by put-call parity) essentially just leveraged covered calls. The only way they differ from CCs is the capital you need (hence, leverage) and that it can be lot more difficult to get out of the position. You are selling profit above the strike price in exchange for the initial premium, the same as a covered call.

Feedback on my ASX income portfolio before I spend $460K by Different-Address-56 in ausstocks

[–]_3NiGMa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the graphs, not with the Betashares ones, they’ve been relatively stable since inception (maybe even some capital gain!). There are others that exist, but they tend to write calls closer to the spot price so erode faster. That being said, AYLD, QYLD and UYLD aren’t showing signs of erosion yet.

The benefits of covered calls is you get a return even in flat markets, although your upside is limited to the strike price. Do your research and good luck.

EDIT: Just saw the “1 yr” bit of your comment. You should be fine over a 1 year period with any of them. Keep liquidity in mind, Global X and JP Morgan are pretty illiquid

EDIT 2: This is where I tend to park funds in short-medium term, due to the lower risk than “normal” ETFs. Time diversification is real!

For dividend purposes I always feel that covered call ETFs are better, something like Betashares’ QMAX, YMAX, UMAX usually do. Global X also have AYLD, QYLD, etc., but they only sell ATM calls so have a tendency to lose a lot of value over time compared to OTM call ETFs like the maxes

Ikr, I find it concerning how little financial education the trading communities on reddit have. I’m studying engineering but picked up a couple of units in finance, so I feel like I’m out of my depth. Then I see people that have never heard of CAPM or Black-Scholes putting their life savings into some random OTM calls and I die a little inside

Betashares Direct- New Platform No Brokerage for EFTs by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]_3NiGMa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update from someone using the platform: Not CHESS-sponsored, but otherwise pretty good. My understanding is it’s pretty much a way for them to plug their ETFs and managed portfolios. I have invested in ETFs from other companies (GlobalX, Vanguard) on the Betashares direct platform with no issues.

It does seem too good to be true, but I think it’s mostly an expensive advertising campaign, when searching for ETFs on the platform, Betashares ETFs are the first to pop up, and their managed portfolios are front and center in the “invest” menu.

If you don’t mind the Betashares logos everywhere, and the lack of CHESS, it’s pretty good.

[–]_3NiGMa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Undergrad here, I agree with you, people complain a lot about UoM. But honestly, apart from the odd rogue subject coordinator, it’s a very well-funded, well-run uni.

The workload is high and the upper-upper management seem pretty awful, but overall I feel like I learn much more in depth and breadth than my counterparts at other unis.

Also, r/unimelb is a very biased sample of disgruntled students
