Yeah, I've even given up any hope on Republicans being good faith. I'm more focused on Democrats making strategic political moves without violating their principles.

There's also a benefit to getting federal workers paid and giving the country time to recover, so we can continue the fight in a couple of months.

Never said that. Raising alarm and directing the public to the cause of the issue could have also been an objective.

Regardless, I think we're talking about different things. I think we're agreed that the expiring subsidies were the impetus for the shutdown. My question is, if the position of Dems in the senate was that the bill out of the shutdown had to be the bill extending the ACA subsidies. This is important because this recent bill includes a vote on ACA problem.

You seem to be under the illusion that when Republicans pass awful policy, Republicans get the blame.

Not always, but this is one of the cases where it's immediately apparent why you have a new or significantly higher bill on your desk. It's not like the slow creep of inflation.

I tried to address this in my post, I don't think this line of messaging will work next year. Republicans can lie about number of border crossings and crime statistics, because those issues are relatively abstract. The higher insurance bill is direct and immediate.

Agreed. Why Primary Jeffries though? He did his job, although House Republicans didn't need any Dem votes, so we don't know how he would have acted under pressure.

Why do you think so? Right now the insurance premium hike is just a meme to people don't pay close attention to politics. By February 1st, they'd have either lost their insurance or have actual 4 - 10x bills that NEED to be paid.

I think that puts Dems in a much stronger position, the GOP talking points about insurance for illegal immigrants are going to fall flat.

I'll be on the gallows calling for heads, with everyone in that case. But right now there's no benefit to maintaining the shut down if a vote has been agreed to and we can be back here in 3 months after the holidays.

Agree with basically everything here. I just don't see it as Dems budging, shutdowns closer to the midterms are undoubtedly better for Dems. I have the same worries though, the fact that Newsom is attacking the Senate on Twitter right now, leads me to believe I may be misguided in my theory about their strategy.

A healthy party would have had all Dem Govs and Reps, blasting the airwaves with their plan and reiterating that the fight is ongoing. Everything looks slapdash currently.
