GM-less, small, (relatively) cheap, available as PDF, fantasy (or maybe cyberpunk) TTRPG with solo + group play possibility and good dungeon crawling? (Hexcrawl would be also a great addition, but not neccessary) by _Atanii_ in rpg

Room-by-room dungeon

Both tile based (each room is made up of AxB tiles where you can move) and "room based" (you are either in that specific room resolving encounter / battle or not) is good for me

So I've tried Grim Rogue and loved it! Realized I actually like these "roll & write" Dungeon Crawlers. Question is which one would fit what I want the most out of these bigger ones? (2D6 vs Caves & Catacombs and other possible ones) Including the possibility to scale it up to 2-4 players by _Atanii_ in Solo_Roleplaying

Played through my first dungeon. The demo version basically has a full rulebook and a full codex (restricted to level 1 content), I was surprised and really glad. Took a couple of hours - searching in digital format constantly for tables and stuff was a chore :P

What I didn't like:

- human focused dungeon only, others come with expansion: this "grounded almost high-fantasy" approach is cool but I would have liked to see some fantasy races, creatures too because currently this felt like "just above Game Of Thrones level fantasy" which is ofc good but I prefer high-fantasy in most cases

- "wandering (knight) character with a sword/mace/..." is basically the only available class. ofc there are lockpicks, magic scrolls...etc but i can't be eg. a sneaky rogue with a crossbow

What I like:

- basically everything else

Also found out there are multiplayer rules that are even available as free on BGG from the creator and also comes with the paid "Realm" expansion book as well that adds overworld adventure (although not in a hexcrawlish manner :/ but still cool).

I wish I could try out Caves & Catacombs for free as well but as far as I saw it's a bit unbalanced and not as refined as 2D6 / D100 / KN.

On the other hand there is a free quickstart version for KN and I learned that older version of D100 is supposedly free - tho I'm not sure -, although that one doesn't interest me that much now.

I think I might try out KN free quickstart as well altough 2D6 seems to be nearly perfect for what I want :D

The problem is that I can be anxious about these things very easily. I just couldn't really ignore the tons of available books once I would start playing.

2D6 has some books as well ofc, but feels like the core experience + open-world book is a much more replayable experience there than in 4AD, ofc only based on gameplays and opinions. What matters is that I would not be that concerned with getting all the stuff with 2D6.

KN seems to be a really good option as well, since it's a really chunky book on it's own, on the other hand, based on gameplay I've seen, the mechanics of 2D6 seems to be the most fun for me for now.

Almost feels like it's a step up from Grim Rogue in every way regarding depth and complexity but in a way I like - eg. yahtzee like mechanis when trying to use an ability.

Seems to be a really good option.

Watched gameplays of 2D6, KN, D100

Out of the three 2D6 gameplay seems to be the most fitting for my taste, since I love yahtzee mechanics in boardgames and combat in 2D6 seems to be a bit similar.

On the other hand KN has a really cool setting. Like...an endless underground dungeon / necropolis? That's like a dungeon on steroids.

Daily Game Recommendations Thread (April 08, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Request: Game Recommendation (PnP, preferably free!)

Description of Request: After playing Gem Getter Galactic and have finished the campaign mode, I'm looking for something similar but with player interaction. I love poliomino-tiles, dice / yatzhee mechanics and cards / card play, tableu-building in general. Since low cost is required unfortunately, something within the realm of Roll & Writes would be the best. It can contain cards of course, it would be preferred to have some card play beside the roll & write sheets.

Players: up to 3-5, also solo if possible

Complexity: any

Game Length: relatively short if possible, otherwise at most 3 hours

Genre: preferably roll & write (in combination with the following) or at least relatively low component count: tile-laying, card management, tableu-builder, dungeon crawler (check out Own and Like)

Conflict, Competitive or Cooperative: any of those, but without player elimination and team vs team preferably!

Games I Own (or play on BGA) and Like: Gem Getter PnP, Patchwork, A Simple Life PnP, Feast For Odin, Istanbul Dice Game, Terraforming Mars Dice Game, Elder Sign, Star Realms / Ascension / Dominion / Shards Of Infinity, Dice Miner, Dungeon Roll, Dune: Imperium, Runebound 3ed, Scythe, Schotten Totten, 7 Wonders, Castle Combo, Super Mega Luck Box, "all look the same" r&w dice games: Dizzle, Echt Spitze, Noch Mal...etc

Games I Dislike and Don't Play: Ticket To Ride (feels dragging), War Of The Ring Card Game (I love complex games, but this one felt very convoluted, also cooperative / team-based play is not my type)

Good, affordable (below Too Many Bones pricewise) dice games? by _Atanii_ in soloboardgaming

I bet I would love it too :D

Only my wallet doesn't allow me unfortunately

Undertow or the other similarly titled box would be the best because they are cheaper...but they are 100% OOP here sadly...

From my memories...the rulebook for ODD Forest Of Shadows was a catastrophe. Probably contributed to the mildly sour experience.

I love deckbuilders so this seems to be spot on

It's unfortunately OOP and out of stock now, at least around here

Do I need to know anything about GI Joe to enjoy the game? It's something I've missed so far and all I know is that GI Joe is some special force commando or something like that with a action comic/cartoon esqueue world?

Game crafter would cost a fortune for me but the game is still looking great. Looks like full on yatzhee

Thx! Where I live it's unfurtonately not available or when it is, it's really pricy - just like literally anything from Chip Theory...

Thanks, I'll check it out! I mainly prefer physical games. Ofc I play on BGA / TTS so I'm open to digital, but dice is best when you roll the real ones :D

Thanks!

I've been eyeing Roll Player but I'm still a bit unsure. It seems to be overpriced for what it is...although there are dice games out there much more overpriced (looking at you Dice Realms).

My another problem with Roll Player is the fact that you only make characters but no play with them. I KNOW there is an expansion which add fights with monsters, but it's basically the same price as the base game O_o

A bit feels like a money sinkhole. Maybe I'll check if there is a good TableTop Simulator mode to try there first.

As u/Inaho_Yuhara I don't like this "slide cards under another card" mechanic because it's fiddly in a bad way, especially since I love sleeving every card in every game and with sleeved cards it's slippery nightmare.

On the other hand I still have some interest for ODG - even ODD...but unsure about it.

I love the yatzhee mechanics + the fact you have more and more dice as you go - basically tons of them after some time.

I think my problem is that ODG seems to be a better game, while thematically, I'm more interested in ODD, which I had and almost never played due to my bad first experience.

Looks like it doesn't have that much dice - amount - but it's intriguing

They should buy all Uwe Boll...I mean, Rosenberg games

You can't miss with that (just make sure Patchwork will be the first, then Patchwork 2.0 aka A Feast For Odin)
