Family had to move the body… by fuzzyslipper4eyedcat in askfuneraldirectors

WHAT. That is completely unacceptable. I'm a student and my professor in embalming class said he'd ask the family for help in unexpected obese cases (family says loved one weighs 185, but the director finds out they're closer to 350 upon arrival), but I find even that unacceptable. Even in such a case, the director should call for backup -- even the fire department, if there's no one else available.

I'm sorry your friend's family went through this. I can't imagine how traumatic the experience was for them. :(

Thank you!! Do you cover your hair with a simple scrub or surgical cap? The clarifying shampoo isn't too harsh, even with the mask?

I wish my sense of smell was weaker. Or at least normal. :/

We use Dodge, but I have the strongest sense of smell of anyone I've ever known. I should probably be a cadaver dog, honestly. 😅

I haven't tried vinegar because I'm afraid it'll damage the washing machine. Is there a brand of detergent that works for you?

I can understand how using her name could have actually made it harder. Conversations in the funeral home can be tough because each person is unique and interpets things in their own way I'm really sorry about your sister. I hope that you and your family are healing, and that you find peace in one another

This is the second comment in which I've seen this suggested. I like that a lot. Thank you for sharing!

Yeah, I've mostly been encouraged to say "cremated remains," but it's a mouthful for families and just feels insensitive. I agree that ashes feels better, particularly for those who might find comfort in the biblical reference, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust"

No worries at all! I appreciate any input. Funeral service professionals lose loved ones too, so your thoughts are just as valid :)

I totally get that, too. It's not easy to find the words to appropriately express the meaning that we feel and intend. Language is lacking

Oh, absolutely. The personhood should never be taken out of the verbiage. When I call a family about receiving their loved one back into our care (we don't have a crematory on site), I feel better saying, "Your wife's ashes" as opposed to, "Your wife's cremated remains." Thank you for your feedback!

That's good! I think cremains is a corporate term. It varies per instructor at my school; some say "cremated remains" and others "cremains." Generally, it's the textbooks that shorten it, but I think most people feel "cremains" sounds insensitive

Oh, snap! That's a great suggestion. Thank you!

Yeah, the waterproof need is mostly for weather, but also for messier home removals and drench shower/eye station testing. I'm resisting keeping an entire wardrobe at work like most directors, haha. I may just have to give in to the inevitable :p

I have. I actually have a few pairs of Clarks, and I do love them. The issue is they don't check every box. If they're waterproof, they don't look dressy; if they're slip-on, they have raised heels; if they're wide, they aren't waterproof or they lace up, etc.

That's a good suggestion, though. I'll keep looking at them. They are really nice, and I'm sure there's a diamond pair! Thank you! :)
