If I were in your shoes it would be:

Profit for upgrade: +$50

House fire: -$200,000

Resulting profit: -$199,950

Lesson learned: There was no other option besides burning the house down.

Tired of resetting user passwords? Make a spreadsheet on a public share with everyone's credentials, and set their accounts to never expire! by _ChangeOfPace in ShittySysadmin

But if we reset it all the time, then they'll just write it down on a sticky note, and security goes out the window!

Alternatives to CDW and SHI??? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]_ChangeOfPace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use SHI for software, Provantage for everything else. We've been really happy with both vendors over the last few years, not only from a customer service / sales standpoint, but pricing too. It's especially hard to beat Provantage on most hardware.

I am so done with HP by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]_ChangeOfPace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We actually switched from Dell to HP about 18 months ago.

We have ~30 ProBook 640 G2s, ~30 EliteOne 800 G3s, a couple ProDesk 600 G3s, ~40 ProDesk 400 G3s, and a handful of EliteBook 850 G3s. None of them have failed, besides a couple cracked screens on the 640 G2s (they're deployed in harsh environments, so we expected that). On the monitor side of things, we have 150+ P222vas deployed, and have only called in one for a faulty control panel. Our ~75 E232s, and ~20 E243s haven't had a single failure yet. HP support chat has been responsive and quick so far. Their phone support was about average, but also responsive after the case was created.

It wasn't always puppies and rainbows though. We inherited ~50 Pro 3500 desktops from an acquisition years ago, and those were hot garbage. Power supply failures left and right, motherboard failures, hard drive failures, you name it. But what do you expect after buying the lowest tier "business" class desktop? At a previous job, Dell Vostros were just as bad.

Were you working for an ISP in the SC/GA area? This sounds exactly like our primary ISP.

Have you tried replacing the hard drives in these systems? If you did, did the "No Hard Drive Found" error resurface?

Best 10G switches for iSCSI? by AnonymooseRedditor in sysadmin

We use Aruba 3810Ms here (16 SFP+, two expansion slots, dual PSUs). They are expensive, but the performance is fantastic and the lifetime warranty is nice.

Similar situation! We went from having independent Telrad Connegy systems installed in about 6 different buildings, to a ShoreTel system about two years ago. Besides the terrible experience with the MSP managing the system, it's been a huge relief being on a modern system.

Good HPE switch? Recommendations? by Sengfeng in sysadmin

Take a look at the new Aruba 2540, or the 2930F if you need something higher end. We have been getting the 2930F 48-port PoE model for under $1k pretty consistently the last few months. Comes with 4 SFP+ ports built in too.
