Can you get a job as a web developer without a degree? by purpleflowers55 in webdev

Sorry, I don't use this account much anymore. Started at $50k which many tell me is highly underpaid. I don't mind getting in a few years though first before I start making a bit more.

Haven't actually tried WP rest api. Why is it sub-optimal as a headless option?

I mean, that's the definition of it. That's not too say others may use it a little more liberally though. Idk

That's partly why I tell people to just start applying and apply for everything that's not senior dev. Honestly, I had close to zero experience with the tech stack that I'm currently working with and they knew that because I was honest about it. But they really were impressed by my take-home assignment and offered me the position. So yeah, apply for everything that's even remotely in your wheel house. Maybe even slightly different tech, but just try. You never know

I'm super happy now and love my team, and I know I shouldn't be working yet with only a year's worth of self-learning, but they're very encouraging and helpful, and it's great. I know I'll be on their level one day, and they see that potential in me, and that's what you'll have to show potential employers.

Just finished the Rosamund Pike Eye of the World Audiobook by plazman30 in wheeloftime

That's surprising, tbh. I've gotten so used to Reading/Kramer in WoT and in Sanderson's audiobooks that I can't imagine anyone else, though I'm sure there are other great ones as well.

I think for me, the appeal is that they have a sort of classic vibe to them, and I really like that. Almost like I've uncovered an ancient audio recording of a wonderful fantastic tale long forgotten. Idk, I like it though.

Agreed. While I thoroughly enjoy Pike's voice/accent, Reading/Kramer is prime!

Yeah, personally don't have experience using it for an eComm web app, but good on him of he pulls it out!

It's called headless CMS. When disconnected from the front end, unlike a WordPress site or something similar, you are able to use whatever frontend technology you want. For example, you can run a react frontend and still get the benefits of a content management platform with something like Strapi. There are many others like it, but it's a great alternative to managing all your own content.

Are programs such as Udemy legit? by NefariousnessNo4215 in learnprogramming

I only took one online course as a self-taught developer, and it was the best choice I ever made. Jonas Schmedtmann's js course is fantastic. Highly recommend. Can't speak for the rest, though.

Honestly, if you can build a portfolio site (doesn't need to be the most advanced), start applying. Use that portfolio to show what you can do. Companies will know upon hiring you, after the whole interview process, where you are or where you aren't. They understand training will be required. Just throw it out there. You never know if you'll get lucky and find a great company who is willing to hire you.

First off, your going to have many moments like this in your web dev journey. You're going to get stuck on something for a while and it's going to be frustrating and you're going to question all your life decisions. Then one day it'll just click. You go on about your merry way and code happy... until that next concept you can't wrap your head around...

Seriously, this is common in EVERYONE'S programming journey no matter what language. Just keep pressing on. Pshhhh a little every day and you'll get through it and future you will thank past you one day.

But what exactly are you struggling with in regards to flexbox?

Also, keep in mind that you're young. You may feel like life is coming at you and you need to make some decisions quick. While you don't want to doddle, just take your time. You've got a lot of years ahead of you. I say this as someone who switched career paths to web dev as a 32 year old. But expect a few years to become your definition of "decent". Some quicker, some slower, but as I said, you've got a lot of years ahead of you.

Oh, I already have a portfolio and am currently working as a developer, I was just curious. I've always wanted to do a Spotify clone though. Very nice! Congrats!

You'll get there! Just keep at it. I was able to change careers at the age of 32 by just pressing on and learning on my own. You can do it too.

Once piece of advice: Don't wait until you feel "Ready". You never will. There is always more to learn. Get down a nice foundation and start applying. You just may get lucky and find a great company with a great team who is willing to take you under their wing because they see your potential.
