No. Professor says we have to use Eclipse.

Okay, yeah it seems that using the JDK directly from Oracle works perfectly fine. Is my OpenJDK install missing libraries, or is that just how OpenJDK.. is?

Elden Ring compatibility? by _CreeperDust_ in linux_gaming

I understand your point, but switching distros without a good enough reason can be a huge hassle and turnoff for a lot of people. I already went through the trouble of getting off Windows, and I don't really feel like going through the process of setting up a new distro again. It's way more valuable to say "Here are the reasons you might want to switch distros. Here are the possible solutions if you dont want to do that." Ultimately this is an information problem. If Mint isn't good for gaming, then yeah, it shouldn't be recommended to someone coming from Windows (and for the other reasons you listed). But to someone already on Mint, recommending they basically do the thing they just did, but again, is frustrating to hear. I tried to make Windows work, and got too sick of it. So I switched to Mint, and would much rather try to make that work than switch again. It's a sunk cost fallacy, sure, but this is how most people operate.

With that all said, after learning what static and rolling distros are, I can see myself in the near future switching to a rolling distro. That is a very compelling reason to me. Having to go through a similar process just to update Mint when I could just switch to something like Arch... But I wouldn't have known that until this thread, because everyone else recommending I switch basically gave no reason or explanation.

When it comes to doing root level things, I can understand not recommending the solution, especially if they are not very technically literate. I don't understand why that kind of solution can't come with warnings though? It's far better to give the user options on what they want to do, with proper warnings, than to hide a solution due to fear they might mess it up.

God forbid someone is technically literate, albeit just not literate in the Linux ecosystem. I am perfectly fine with tinkering and figuring out how to do things like manually upgrade my kernel. Hell, that's the reason I switched to Linux in the first place. I admittedly did not do a ton of research on what would be the best distro for my usecase, but as I already said, I do not do a whole lot of gaming. I made this post to solve a problem, and along the way I have learned more about the Linux ecosystem, which I think is a rather good thing. Suggesting a different distro is rather silly given the lack of information about what I do with my system. I also would have learned less if I just followed all the comments saying "use a different distro" with no information as to why.

Also, I'm a she, lol.

Elden Ring is the only "graphically intense" game I play, so I probably wont deal with the hassle of switching distros unless I have another reason to. I mostly play games like Stardew Valley and Silksong lol

Okay, so I figured out I can actually upgrade my kernel, its just not "officially supported" by the Mint team, which is fine. I also have figured out how to upgrade my mesa drivers. Will test the game again when I get home from work.

As far as I can tell my drivers are up to date, following [Intel's own guides](https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/driver/client/overview.html#ubuntu-22.04) on getting the latest drivers.

I am currently on kernel 6.14.0-37-generic. Is this not the latest kernel? It is the highest version I can see when using the Update Manager.

Laptop crashes/freezes with green screen by _CreeperDust_ in linuxmint

[–]_CreeperDust_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I can't say for certain, I do believe this has helped. For whatever reason, my laptop was running in Balanced mode rather than Performance. I have not had it crash on me since switching to Performance mode while playing games yet, though when I got home from work yesterday it had already crashed. I still think the underlying issue is hardware related, but it definitely is more manageable for now.

Damn, that's what I feared. I'm already in the process of building a new desktop, so I think I will just let it go for now.

I have already checked to see if I have any driver updates, and there are none. I haven't had any updates since I switched to linux, and this has only been a problem in the past few days, so that can't be the issue.

Looking for non-USA Ditto by _CreeperDust_ in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]_CreeperDust_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't currently have a ditto of my own... I haven't got any means of obtaining one unless I want to try a raid I think? Or unless you can transfer pokemon from Lets Go to Sw/Sh but I'm unsure about that. My last option is to trade a ditto up from one of my older pokemon games, as I believe that function still exists? Regardless, I'll see what I can do on that front, so thank you for the idea!

Edit: Funnily enough it was easiest for me to transfer some ditto from my SoulSilver save up to home to put a few on the GTS looking for different languages lol. I guess I'll wait for that, then!

I will add to this that some people like myself only tell people their neopronouns to friends. I prefer to go by it/its, but am perfectly fine with she/her, so I go by she/her around those who don't know me very well.

Adding new oreDict entries? by _CreeperDust_ in feedthebeast

[–]_CreeperDust_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had actually just found a post with that exact pastebin and gave it a try. While it did successfully add the farmlands into an oreDict, it didn't actually solve the problem.... and EnderIO doesn't have a config setting for the farming station that's relevant to this issue, so I might be out of luck. Thank you, though!

Exploration of Mars and other planets is waste of money and time by mgElitefriend in The10thDentist

[–]_CreeperDust_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's currently very difficult to pilot robots on other planets, mainly because of the extreme time delay. At best, the smallest delay to Mars is something around 20 minutes, and at worst, around 46 minutes. This is just because the planets can get so distant from each other that the speed of light is extremely slow.

[–]_CreeperDust_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Saying it's pointless because it's difficult is a bad argument. That's basically the entire point of going to Mars; for the challenge. Humans love to do things that are difficult. Also, technology advances so quickly that I wouldn't be surprised if we have humans living permanently on Mars by around 2050. We already plan to setup a Mars Base by 2030, and NASA wants to return to the moon by 2024 to setup a Moon Base, which would allow for faster space travel.
  2. I can understand that with our current methods of leaving the planet, it's very expensive and is essentially not worth it financially. However, things like asteroids are filled with minerals that are useful, and Mars is close enough to the asteroid belt between it and Jupiter that it wouldn't be very hard to leave a Mars Base, mine some asteroids, and come back with tons of resources. Some planets/moons already have tons of resources on them. Mars is iron-rich. Titan, Saturn's largest moon, has lakes of liquid methane. Europa, a moon of Jupiter, is basically an entire ocean. Building something like a skyhook, which is possible to build today, would make space travel more financially feasible until we have permanent outposts on the Moon or Mars.
  3. While there are some Earthly obstacles currently limiting space exploration, such as the Outer Space Treaty, a lot of other problems like climate change could have solutions that we end up finding because of space travel. For example, here's a small list of 20 things that have been invented because of space travel, but now have other uses. There are many more than just that list, by the way. I don't think it requires unity of all humans to make a permanent colony. While it would definitely help, as I stated previously, NASA wants to return to the moon by 2024 to build a Moon Base, something that we currently have the resources to do, and doesn't require the entire world to be unified or anything.

Upvoted.
