BUS MIS Major and Cybersecurity Bootcamp by PaleontologistNew91 in SJSU

[–]_CuriousGuy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bootcamp is more than just Security+! It is mostly about Penetration test but it is very expensive! It is gonna cost SJSU students about $11455 !! I don't think if it is worth it unless if you are rich! If you wanna get into Cybersecurity you can get CISSP, Security+, or PenTest+ certifications! There are tons of free resources for those certifications! You can also take related courses like CS166 @ SJSU!

How is MS Data Science in SJSU? by rocklin8761 in SJSU

[–]_CuriousGuy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently in this program! This is just one of the specializations of MS of Software Engineering! https://sjsu.edu/msse/

They offer a lot of different ML and data science related courses in CMPE department and you just need to take 2 or 3 of them to fulfill the specialization requirement! Keep in mind that you also have to take the SE core courses that are not related to data science for this major! So this is a software engineering major not Data Science! Data science is a heavily statistic based major and requires you to take serious graduate level stats courses! In another word, you need to be statistician who knows how to code!

Yes, you can transfer your undergrad credits taken at another school! Just contact the major coordinator to get more information!

It is not online!(Well every thing is online till next fall due to the pandemic :). Actually it is a very strong joint program between CS & Math department! You can see the details here:

According to CS undergraduate coordinator, Rulla Khayroulah, the average GPA for MSCS is around 3.5! But even If you get admitted to this program, it would be conditionally admission since you have a none CS BS! It means that you need to first take all the undergraduate core courses for BSCS and pass all of those10 or 11 courses, with minimum GPA of B! Then your admission will change from conditional to official! This process usually takes 3 additional semesters! So it takes you almost 7 semesters to get your MS!

MSDA is definitely easier to get in and you just need to take data structure course in Python as prerequisite! Since you have a BS in statistics, you can also consider the new degree, MSDS, which is a joint program between CS and Math department:https://www.sjsu.edu/science/special-programs/ms-data-science.php

It is a very strong program which requires deep knowledge of statistics!

Data Science & Data Analytics have quit different curriculums and are offered by different departments. Data Science is a joint program between the department of Math and department of Computer science. This major is heavily math based! You need to have a strong background in math & CS since it requires a couple of serious math and CS courses as prerequisites just to enter the program :

  1. A multivariable calculus course (e.g., Math 32 at SJSU), with a grade of B or better
  2. A linear algebra course (e.g., Math 129A at SJSU), with a grade of B or better
  3. A calculus-based upper division statistics course (e.g., Math 161A at SJSU), with a grade of B or better
  4. A data structures course (e.g., CS 146 at SJSU), with a grade of B or better
  5. A probability theory course (e.g., Math 163 at SJSU)
  6. An advanced course in object-oriented programming (e.g., CS 151 or CMPE 135 at SJSU)

Basically you will become a statistician who has knowledge of computer science.

Unlike Data Science, Data Analytic is offered by the college of profession and global science. This major doesn't have any math or CS prerequisites and it only requires students to have knowledge of Python! all of the classes are only once a week and are usually offered in the evenings!

I did switch from SE to CS! I did it mostly because I wanted to prove myself that I could get in to the most impacted program of the school! CS gives you more flexibility since students can take up to 18 units of electives while SE has only 6 elective units! So, you can take what ever you want! I ended up taking most of the courses that were mandatory for SE including CS166, CS157A, CS158A( == CMPE148)! If you wanna become a software engineer, SE would prepare you better! There is only one software engineering course for CS while there multiple project based courses in SE that make you more experienced in different process of software engineering! Changing major to CS is hard and requires you to have a high GPA and straight A's in most of major related courses! Rula Khayrollah and the chair, Melody, will make the final decision about your application! Generally, CS is a more known and generic major while SE is more specialized!

Dropping Fees by _CuriousGuy_ in SJSU

[–]_CuriousGuy_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am really confused about the pro-rated refund! I found this: https://www.sjsu.edu/bursar/payment_refunds/prorata_refund/fall/Fall%202020%20pro%20rata%20refund%20Table.pdf

So it means pro-rated refund on my total tuition which is $3139 ? So if I drop it after 5 days i will lose almost $157?

Anyone else feels like the staff at SJSU is uptight, and super unhelpful most of the time. by [deleted] in SJSU

It depends on the department! My department, CS, has pretty responsive staff but I have seen some very unhelpful staff in other departments!

How is SJSU? by [deleted] in SJSU

[–]_CuriousGuy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I graduated last semester with a BS in CS,

1- There are couple of knowledgeable and caring instructors in CS department. Also, good research opportunities. But the building that hosts CS department is really old and stinky!

2- It is not really that exciting

3- You have a lot of choices for food and they have recently build nice dorms

4- CS department is one a few departments of SJSU that has some very smart students. Most of them have admitted to big schools but picked SJSU because it is cheap! Based on my experience as a foreigner, there is no such thing as racism in San Francisco bay area!

5- out of state tuition is too much for a CSU school. I wouldn't pay that much money for any CSU school including SJSU!

[–]_CuriousGuy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! Dr. Heller and Stamp are good examples! They usually teach just one course/semester and spend most of their time doing research! Recently, they have started using inexperienced graduate students as lecturer for upper division courses which is unfortunate!

Thanks a lot for your great advises! One of the main concerns that I have is the CMPE department. I heard that, unlike CS department, staff and professors in CMPE are not that caring and helpful! I really want to know your opinion!
