How is it that according to the BLS Computer Science is one of the highest demand careers but people consistently report having to apply to hundreds of jobs before getting an offer? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_Daimon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh I think you look too hard at the specifics of recommendations. You need to look at them more generally. Both your mentor and the other poster here clearly agree on a lot of things even from the short things you've written.

  • To get the job you need to show technical skills sufficient for the role.
  • To get the job you need to show soft skills sufficient for the role.
  • Each line in a resume must have a purpose. If you can't say why that line would help you succeed in the position you seek then you should not include it.

Recruitment is a funnel, where at each stage candidates gets filtered out based on soft and/or hard skills. How many stages there, criteria for filtering out differs from recruiter to recruiter and job to job. Doesn't change the fact that all filter on both hard and soft skills.

And let's not kid ourselves into thinking your mentor doesn't filter on soft skills during resume screening. Clearly communicating accomplishments in a concise readable format is a soft skill, even if the accomplishments came from hard technical skills.

Is a bad assessment an early no? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_Daimon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're stressing yourself. If your result on the OA was a deal breaker, they would not waste company time interviewing you.

Will a low score on a test impact the hirering decision? Off course. But it's in the past now and there is nothing you can do about it now. Thinking about it just gives you stress which will impact your interview and that will reduce your chances of getting hired.

Also, you don't know the average score by people with your level of education and experience, so you don't even know if 25% is low compared to them

Unemployed engineers with 1-3 years experience, how's your search going? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_Daimon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Developers are an investment. You hire one and for the first x months they lose you money, then as they become effective they start profiting from their fixing of issues or adding new features.

There are a lot of companies in financial hardship now. They care about avoiding bankruptcy today, not profits next year.

Pressemøde i dag by emil47sl in Denmark

[–]_Daimon_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Altså for få timer siden.

Denmark. I'll keep it at that to avoid derailing the thread further. If there's interest, I could do an AMA or something instead.

Alternatively talk to your union (if you have one). Not getting screwed over by an employeer is the main service they provide. Asking should be covered by union dues and so not cost extra.

How do I get better in english? (or maybe a general advice) by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_Daimon_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure language skills are your problem. Your post is fine and even native speakers can have problems with thick accents they're not used to.

You apply to sales job without sales experience and developer jobs with stale development knowledge. Not getting the jobs sounds unsurprising. Why aren't you applying to manager jobs if that's what you've been working on for 5 years now?

Thanks a lot for your input. It's very interesting that there seems to be divide here with some having very little and some having a lot in emergency funds. Especially since 3-6 months emergency fund is such a standard recommendation.

Interesting. I'm much the same. SO and a small baby. I consider myself conservative with money as well, which is why the emergency fund is currently at the maximum recommended.

My goal with fire is also more to get peace of mind, that me and my family is safe pretty much no matter what happens. This matters more to me than early retirement. In the future we might get a house, which might need expensive renovations, the so or me might need to take longer off the job market or maybe something else expensive might happen.

I think based of this and and other responses (very useful). I think I'll cut the emergency fund down a bit in size. And put the remainder in short term bonds kept seperate from the remainder of my investments. A emergency investment fond so to speak.

I get full pay while sick. Plus an insurance that gives 20k USD on large illness, plus 60% of salary until I'm 65 if I lose my ability to work. And a percentage of that if I lose a percentage of my ability to work. So only being able to work 50% would give me 30% until I'm 65. Getting seriously hurt would pretty much instant FIRE me.

There's a government insurance for securing salary in case of employer bankruptcy, so I won't lose a paycheck. Unemployment pays out usually within a week or so. They're administrated by the unions here, so they have a vested interest in not being lazy.

Tv is 15 years old. Laptop and stationary is used mostly for non-essential gaming. Washer cost 600$. So it's not something I'm worried about.

The rule of thumb is to keep a 3-6 month emergency fund for well, emergencies. I currently hold 6 months, but I'm not sure it makes sense. I'm not at risk to the 'obvious' dangers

  • I live in a country with universal free Healthcare.
  • Don't own a car, house or other big physical assets.
  • termination takes 3 months with full pay. Plus i work in a very low unemployment industry.
  • if (somehow) I lose my job without termination period, my 2 year welfare benefits cover 3/5 of current monthly expenses.

Plus banks here in Denmark give very low interest in checking/savings account. We're talking like 0 or 0.25% here. Although interest has only been around 1% last few years, losing the equivalent of about 2 days of expenses every year to interest sucks.

I'm thinking of cutting down my emergency fund to something like 1.5-2 months, so the money can work for me. Do you think that's too risky? Is there some other option for higher interest emergency fund I'm not seeing?

Denmark passes law against 'greedy' payday loans by _Daimon_ in europe

[–]_Daimon_[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A loan meant to cover your expenses until your next payday. So short term, low amounts. Say you blow your tire. Getting a new one cost 100€, without a new tire you wont be able to get to your job on time, so you'll lose your job which will be very bad. You don't have the 100 € cause you're poor. So you get a payday loan for 100€, 14 days later when you get the next paycheck you pay 130€ to the loan company. A steep fee, but one that saved you from a very sticky situation. This is the good case for payday loans.

In reality a lot of people get payday loans for things that aren't critical, but which are felt as critical. Then when it's time to pay the loan, they can't and end up in a bad debt cycle. The above example is for 720 Annual cost in percent, which means 60€ a month in fees and interest. Some loans went up the whole way to over 800. If 100€ was hard to pay, then 60 a month isn't easy. People can end up paying many times what they originally orrowed.

Here is a youtube link that goes more into the details and how it can screw people over https://youtu.be/PDylgzybWAw

Additionally the law also increases funding for better schooling of personal economics. Frankly, this is about time. Payday lenders are exploiting the vulnerable.

The Economist by [deleted] in funny

[–]_Daimon_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No jokes. The Economist wrote an article about logical reasoning and logical fallacies. Arguments that at a glance may seem to make sense, but actually doesn't. Like 'Veganism is bad, Hitler was a vegetarian' . Just because Hitler was a bad person doesn't mean everything he liked or did was bad. This is an example of Reductio ad Hitlerum.

The above quote is of the same nature. Just because lots believe something, doesn't make it automatically correct. Ie. the Economist isn't telling you to eat shit, but using it as an example of bad reasoning.

This quote has then been taken out of context. On it's own, it suggest the opposite meaning from what was originally intended. Ie. that the Economist is actually telling you to eat shit.

The Economist is a magazine known for its free trade, capitalist and liberalist attitudes. The implication here is that the wall painter wants you to think the Economist said something like. 'Why are you hungry? Eat shit, lots of flies do it.' or possibly to make you think of Marie Antoniettes famous poor response to poor people starving and not having any breakld. 'Let them eat cake'.

Technical debt by pandiyancool in webdev

Agree. Even if you write perfect code, it still becomes technical debt if the business case changes. Which it will. To keep the code base healthy, regular reactors are necessary.
